What do you think about sneakers worn with a tuxedo?

Asked by marco_esquandolis (71points) January 21st, 2010

I am thinking about getting my 6 groomsmen some sneakers as their groomsmen present (probably some retro looking adidas or pumas) to wear with their tux at my wedding.

Im sure my parents and some of the older people in the crowd wont like it, but I dont really care because I am paying for the entire wedding myself.

Any ideas for sneakers? I was thinking mostly black, but Im up for anything that looks good.

It looks stupid and you’ll probably regret it for the rest of your married life. . . . Of course, after the divorce, you’ll be able to find humour and amusement about it.

If you must, go with black Chuck Taylor’s and have all the groomsmen slick back their hair with grease.

I think it’d be pretty cool. It’s your wedding (and your fiance) so go with what you guys want and screw don’t listen to anyone else’s opinion.

My first thought on seeing someone in a Tux and sneakers? “What an idiot!” : D

Way too tacky. No, no, & no.

I’m not crazy about the idea, but if you insist on doing that ,black would be the way to go.

Colored Converse high-tops. No two pairs alike. (You could even mix up the pairs.) I’d say “Cool!” Not very formal or conventional, to be sure—but fun.

(Be careful how you generalize about the older people in the crowd. People my age were your age in the sixties, you know, and wasn’t that a time to be young!)

I don’t have a problem with it, as long as the shoes are cons..haha

Doesn’t appeal to me personally, but what the hey… it’s your wedding. (Also your wedding photos.) I do agree Converse high-tops would be classier.

Meh, I’m not sure how I feel about this. I would like to do the same, but I don’t want it to look tacky.

I would go for just some plain old Nike’s, probably black with a white stripe or the inverse. Like the kind George Costanza wore on Seinfeld. Those can look pretty snazzy.

Abominable. But then, so were the outfits I wore in the 60s and 70s.

I second Converse high tops.

You could go here and “create your own” Vans shoe. Personalize it. Other brands do this: Etnies, Nike, Keds, even Converse! Just search “design your own shoe” and you may find other companies that do this.

I like the idea of mixing and matching colors. You could order a few pairs, then swap them so that no two pairs are alike. That would be fun!

@lilikoi, look—1337 lurve.

Woody Allen wore red high tops with his tux when he used to go to events like The Academy Awards. Personally, I loved the look.

I enjoy the idea of being iconoclastic. Make new rules.

Jeruba's avatar

@gailcalled, I’m afraid the younger generation is getting more conservative. What will it take to shake them loose a little, do you think?

CyanoticWasp's avatar

Look, I’m no fan of formal wear. I hate, absolutely, to dress up—for anything. At my marriage we agreed not to use formal wear, and we look like relatively normal people nowadays in those old wedding photos.

I wouldn’t do what you’re doing, because the wedding photos are going to look like it was nothing more than a prank. Do formal or don’t do formal. Don’t do a joke.

Comical. Good for a photo op or something, but I wouldn’t suggest wearing them for the wedding.

@Jeruba Radicalism has had its turn. Conservatism is coming back into style.

I think it would look sweet and make the day special and just yours. Besides, it’s your wedding, if others don’t approve they can show themselves to the exits.

Personally I would go for either the Puma Speed Cats or the Puma Speeder (my fav). Either in black/white or deep maroon/white to keep it simple. Both of those shoes have a low heel which will keep you looking more hip and less ‘hit the gym’.

The Adidas ones all look a little too sporty, in my opinion. They just don’t have the same vibe as a classic pair of Pumas do.

Either go for the formal look or go for some goofy outfits but sneakers with a tux, sounds inane but if it pleases you, go for it, though you may regret it later,

liliesndaisies's avatar

I would not fall in love with the pictures but then again, it’s YOUR wedding. :)

OpryLeigh's avatar

Of course it’s your wedding but seeing as you asked, I am not a fan of sneakers (or trainers we call them in the UK) and tuxedo’s worn together. It seems a bit tacky to be honest.

@marco_esquandolis OP, would you let us know which way you go on this please. Thanks, and I hope you have a great time on your wedding day!

if your young, like.. 14–22 (obviously your not 14) it could be hot (maybe some nikes that match the color of the weddings theme), but on a bunch of old guys, its just weird, and looks like you cant dress yourselves..
