What should I make for my first electronics project?

Asked by Coting (371points) January 26th, 2010

This is just something I want to do in my spare time. I only know basic A level physics and have never done electronics. So what should I start on, what will be satisfying when I make it and easyish. Nothing too easy though.

Go through the following link. This is what I have refered to many.It gives you detailed description on how to make simple and easy projects in electronics.

@Austinlad Aww, but my fave tweets are “I cant believe that guy is driving on his phone” and “Driving is fun, look at how fast I’m going”.

A programmable display I think I’ll choose but I can’t find a webpage that would help me.

A time machine would be cool. And I have been thinking about building a tesla coil. Cool lightning sparks!!!

BEAM robotics is a lot of fun. And you can buy kits.

I introduced my seven year old daughter to one of those radio shack 200–1 project kits(http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3814337&filterName=Category). She loves it,she describes it as her kind of “magic”. No it’s nothing sexy, but it will build you a foundation for building something awesome and actually understanding what you built.

@grumpyfish :: I completely forgot about sparkfun.com. I just ordered this. I have used them before and their customer support is fantastic.

What ever happened to Heathkits?

I did this when I was a kid. At first I started small with a crystal radio and hand wound coils. I graduated to kits and built everything from shortwave radios and computers.

It’s easier now that we have breadboards and integrated circuits. The trick is to build something useful that keeps your interest when the project is finished. You might even use it as a building block for bigger projects.

My grandmother was afraid to come into my room because the door was automatic, the radio had a remote control, and there were many exposed connections. That was in the early ‘60s. There are even more exciting projects today. Go to the library and look at books descriping electronics hobbies, there are many.

The best thing is to make it your career. I have been doing this for 50 years and never worked a day in my life, it is sometimes hard, but always interesting.
