what was The Proprietor, which published books, maps, etc in New England in the early 1800's?

I’ve found a book of Aristotle, published in 1806. The inner page says: 1806 New England: Published for The Proprietor.

I believe (though not 100% certain) that the “proprietor” refers to the owners of the book selling establishment where the book was sold. I’d love to have a definitive answer on this too, though my Googling hasn’t turned one up.
