Have you had any experience with Pulmonary Nodules?

Asked by bstar3 (182points) March 12th, 2010

The doctors told my mom they can’t do anything about it, and search it online. I read this http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.cfm?pageid=p93016
My mom read it. She’s crying so hard. I don’t know what to do.
I can’t see my mom dying in 5 years. I can’t. please tell me if their is anything they can do to help her

There are many benign causes of pulmonary nodules. A pulmonary nodule doesn’t necessarily mean cancer.

You’ll need to provide more information on the nodules, and why they say they can’t do more about it. Nodules range from benign to malignant, so this could be good news (i.e. “there is nothing to do, it’s harmless” (benign)) or bad news (i.e. “this is a horribly malignant nodular cancer that we can’t do anything about” (malignant)).

@Rarebear Nothing a little homeopathy can’t cure, right? ;^)

She just said she visited 3 doctors, and she also said it’s really big. thats all I know

@bstar3 Well, it’s still not enough information for either of us to give a cogent answer. Do they know if it is a cancer?

bstar3's avatar

I think it is.

Wouldn’t they of kept her in the ER? one of the papers i’m reading says “Doctor Feels its okay to let her leave home” or something like that

There’s nothing they can do in an emergency room. If she has cancer she needs to see her regular physician and possibly an oncologist.

It sounds like they are just as unsure as she is. In the ER they probably didn’t do anything terribly invasive, right? I’m not sure how those are biopsied. She needs to schedule an appointment at her regular doctor to follow-up, bring whatever the ER gave her to that appointment and go from there.

Reading things online, without having all the information is sometimes a scary thing to do. Without all the pieces of the puzzle, it’s just speculation.

Trust me, if they said it’s a maligancy, she would remember and they would have referred her on to an oncologist. Possibly even had one speak to her in the ER.

She needs to follow-up with her doctor.

Pulmonary nodules are not always cancerous and malignant pulmonary nodules are not always fatal.

As far as ER doctors, they give emergency treatment only, then the patient has to go to his or her main doctor. She needs to go to her doc with the results and shall probably be referred on from there.

Please do not push the panic button and ask your mother to not push the panic button yet.

Thanks a lot. I’m trying to push my mom to really talk to her doctors about this. I’m so scared.

I had the same thing a few years ago. 2 or 3 doctors looked at the top side of my chest (underneath my arm below the pit) and found these lumps. They thought they may be cancerous and they wanted to perform surgery. Someone asked the nurse what she thought and she suggested swollen lymph nodes and it turns out that she was right. A bottle of antibiotics knocked it out within a week. Rule number one: never trust the internet. Rule number two: get more opinions.
