The same reason people don’t like brussel sprouts. It’s an acquired taste.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Because they don’t know what’s good for them. Black licorice is fantastic!
Well, if so many people don’t like it, it just leaves more for me. :)

DarkScribe's avatar

I don’t know of any licorice lover who doesn’t eat black licorice. What other kind is there? I have always eaten black licorice.

pearls's avatar

I can’t answer for the people who do not like it, but I love it.

davidk's avatar

Black licorice is actually licorice, the other colors are not. Although it is difficult to find licorice with actual licorice root in it anymore because eating too much licorice is not good for you. Modern, American black licorice substitutes Anise for the Licorice root. The taste is similar.

I love black licorice. Dutch, black licorice is yummy. It’s a bit salty. It’s an acquired taste.

Racism !!! Plain ol’ Racism !!

Lightlyseared's avatar

It’s too sweet and has a funny aftertaste.

Fly's avatar

I cannot really describe why I don’t like it. It’s a very bold flavor which invokes a gag reflex in me personally. I just cannot like the black licorice taste.

ucme's avatar

It takes allsorts.

DarkScribe's avatar

@ucme It takes allsorts.

Very droll.

ucme's avatar

@Darkscribe The only licorice i’ll touch.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I loooove black licorice. Always have. But I can’t stand the other flavored stuff. Ick.

gemiwing's avatar

It’s the aniseed. It tastes horrible to me, and those of us with refined palates (fwah fwah fwah lol) hate the taste of that devil-candy.

Oddly enough, when I was younger I liked it but around age five the flavor changed somehow. Perhaps @davidk , that’s when the flavorings changed? I honestly don’t know how different they are.

Steve_A's avatar

There is black licorice…?? Guess I need to try some out, but in all my times I have never seen it in stores.

Where does one go for black licorice?

casheroo's avatar

I don’t like licorice at all. Black licorice is just nasty tasting to me.

Draconess25's avatar

@Steve_A My mom bought me some at Walgreens.

Steve_A's avatar

@Draconess25 Either I’m blind or don’t care to look, I will ask next time( I ain’t got much of a sweet tooth) :)

Fred931's avatar

Dammit, from reading all the posts about licorice, i’ve forgotten how to pronounce it.

HTDC's avatar

It’s so funny, you can tell all the licorice lovers are giving GA’s to the fellow licorice lovers. Oh you licorice people, always sticking up for what you believe in…licorice!

filmfann's avatar

Black Licorice is made with Anise oil, well, that’s what they say.
And when you say it, it sounds like it’s made with anus oil. Tastes that way too.

HTDC's avatar

You know I just realised after writing that response that licorice is a really strange word. I mean lico-rice? Who thought of that?

Fred931's avatar

I think the reason I don’t like licorice is because I tried Twizzlers first. The offsetting bitter taste creeped me the hell out, so I just don’t like it.

@filmfann explains why I’ve always said, ‘It tastes like shit.’

@HTDC I’m just glad that the names of all the stuff that I don’t like stem from unknown sources, rathern than food I do like.

shego's avatar

I like black licorice, but I get it from an organic candy store. Other than that, I won’t eat it because it tastes different, and makes my mouth numb when it is made with anise oil.

Zen_Again's avatar

Loves it! And brussel sprouts, too.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@ucme Yep. I Allsorts at a party – very classy stuff.

ucme's avatar

@worriedguy Yummy for my tummy.

Cruiser's avatar

Are you kidding me?? I love black licorice and chocolate, cherry and strawberry licorice but black licorice is my favorite!!! Big time YUM!

I make a high energy trail mix out of black licorice and brussel sprouts!!

Draconess25's avatar

@Cruiser There’s chocolate licorice?

shadling21's avatar

Black licorice. Ugh. It’s just so strong! I guess I don’t like the taste of anise. I avoid the black stuff at all costs.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I buy the bite sized Twizzler ones. I can just pop them in my mough. Black licorice is good for upset stomachs, BTW.

cazzie's avatar

I make a fudge with bits of black licorice in it. Only for the brave.

netgrrl's avatar

I don’t like anise – you can have ally black licorice. :)

gailcalled's avatar

This people loves black licorice, anise and fennel. I just ate an extraordinary cold beet salad with diced red onions, orange juice, brown rice vinegar, anise seeds and salt and pepper. (Organic beets and someone else peeled them. Perfect.)

rebbel's avatar

I eat bags full of it. Empty.
Coins and honey are my favorites.
It makes me gassy, though.

janbb's avatar

Because black licorice tastes like black licorice.

gailcalled's avatar

@janbb: Perhaps it’s an acquired taste like chopped herring in sour cream and smoked white fish.

Draconess25's avatar

@gailcalled What do beets taste like? I haven’t had the nerve to try them since I watched my grandma eat pickled beets!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@rebbel Thanks for sharing…... LOL

rebbel's avatar

@jbfletcherfan
It was more a kind of warning. :-)

janbb's avatar

@rebbel Guess we know what not to give you at the meetup!

thriftymaid's avatar

Because it tastes like medicine.

slick44's avatar

I love the black, and hate the red.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Love it!

gailcalled's avatar

@Draconess25: Cold cooked beets in a mild vinaigrette are delicious. Have you never had borscht in the summer? It is cold beet soup with sour cream and chopped chives…very refreshing.

Be brave. Taste a freshly cooked, organic beet. It is a sweet vegetable.

tedibear's avatar

I love black licorice! It’s those other colors and flavors that I can’t take.

Draconess25's avatar

@gailcalled Okay! As long as it’s sweet, it’s fine by me!

AstroChuck's avatar

My daughter and I love it. I’m crazy for licorice ice cream too. My wife can eat the red vines. Give me the black licorice anyday. And wash it down with ouzo.

stevenelliottjr's avatar

There is nothing more vile on the planet than licorice. I honestly get naseous thinkig about it.

Draconess25's avatar

@AstroChuck Licorice ice cream?

DominicX's avatar

Because it doesn’t taste good. :)

I don’t hate it; it’s not going to make me throw up or anything, but I would pretty much never choose to eat it. It’s bitter and the flavor is just…not good. My grandmother on the other hand would practically collect black licorice.

AstroChuck's avatar

@Draconess25- Oh yeah. I’m certain they’ll serve it in heaven. Baskin-Robbins used to have it. But the best licorice ice cream ever is at Marianne’s Ice Cream in Santa Cruz, California.

Jude's avatar

Anyone ever tried the Salty Licorice Treats and liked them?

I was friends with a Dutch family growing up, and for them salty Dutch licorice and Dutch baby pancakes with powdered sugar were a treat. Yummy.

deni's avatar

because if death had a taste, it would be similar to black licorice. so. gross.

on the positive side, the other day at the movie store i did see black licorice in the shape of cats. i thought it was very funny.

jca's avatar

i love black licorice.

Berserker's avatar

DarkScribe's avatar

@deni at the movie store i did see black licorice in the shape of cats.

Cruiser's avatar

@Draconess25 Yes! The chocolate licorice of my childhood was some of the best ever. Big wide long twists of melt in your mouth fudge/chocolaty goodness! Yum yum yum!

slick44's avatar

Its like good and plenty.

OneMoreMinute's avatar

@Cruiser You can find that Old Fashioned Black Licorice just like when you were young on Amazon.com
There’s several pages of several kinds. Many more than I ever knew about.

I Lurve/Love/Luv Black and Red Licorice. the old fashioned kinds. Not the dollar a bag plastic rubber sticks at Wallmart.

jca's avatar

Black jellybeans are the best!!!!!!

Cruiser's avatar

@Draconess25 , @OneMoreMinute I found this site which seems to have a close approximation of what I remembered as a kid!
