With the oil spill / slick approaching Louisiana, what is being done for the wildlife?

Asked by partyparty (9162points) May 1st, 2010

What do you think can, and should, be done for the wildlife at risk because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? I here it is approaching coastal Louisiana, imperilling shrimp fishing grounds, oyster beds, tuna spawning grounds and fragile wetlands and wildlife.

What penalties do you think should be imposed on the oil company? Should drilling be stopped in this area?

They need to clean that shit up pronto. I hope they are working 24/7 on that. I have not been following it much. I’d like to see extremely stiff penalties for this (fines) but I doubt it will be as stiff as I’d like.

I’m a socialist and am cool with offshore drilling. We have to do it somewhere. I think we need better regulations to prevent this type of accident (or gross negligence).

If companies started putting people before profit we might stop looking worse than China.

@lilikoi Yes I agree with you entirely, stiff penalties, but then I suppose the price of oil will soar
@johnpowell Yes we do have to drill somewhere, and I agree with you about putting people before profit, but my concern is the wildlife. It is so very, very sad.

I know there are environmental groups doing what they can to protect the wildlife but it is very difficult to mitigate the harm. I will be down in Florida in a few weeks and will no doubt learn more about it.

@janbb I know I can’t personally do anything about the situation and the wildlife, but would you let me know what, if anything is being done for the wildlife? I believe there is a species of turtle in the vicinity at risk.

When the Valdez spilled many volunteers were needed to help with clean-up. I’m sure there will be things you can do.

@partyparty – Reuters put out an article today about the actions of wildlife rescue teams, and Christian Science Monitor wrote one about endangered sea turtles and the spill.

@tinyfaery Thanks for your answer, but I am in the UK.
@xxii Many thanks for the information. Glad something is being done for these poor creatures.
