Does anybody illuminate texts anymore?

Asked by Nullo (22009points) May 31st, 2010

It was popular, in the Middle Ages, to pour oodles of time and effort into putting elaborate (though not necessarily relevant) pictures on book pages. Does anybody still do that?

there are artists who specialize in illumination and calligraphy. We had a friend who donated his illumination talents to make two dozen original birth announcements for the birth of our son.

My girlfriend does.

Yes, many artists do this. My partner did a stunningly beautiful job on our “family contract”. Medieval-style lettering with tendrils of flowers around the edges. Illuminated capitals with portraits of the three of us worked into them. Done on real sheepskin vellum.

Not so much for books, since books are printed now, and the page “illuminations” would also be printed [as in a modern reproduction of the pages of an illuminated manuscript], but for small fancy “one-off” things for keepsakes as mentioned above by @stranger_in_a_strange_land.
