What should I see/do between Beijing and Singapore?

Asked by The_Idler (9613points) June 13th, 2010

I fly out (from London) to Hong Kong in early July, make my way along the coast up to Beijing, then back down through the hinterland to Hanoi, Saigon, across Cambodia to Bangkok, down the Thai peninsular to Kuala Lumpur, over the bridge to Singapore, and fly back from Singapore in early September.

This map gives a rough idea of the itinerary. I will be spending about 4 weeks in China & 4 weeks in SE Asia.

Please advise on anything you recommend doing in or between those places marked on the map.

General advice on travelling this journey alone overland is also very welcome.

In Singapore, the Battle Box is a must, in Chongqing you should see the Pandas and in Beijing the Great Wall is a non-brainer. Have a great trip!

I was under the impression that Chongqing wasn’t much of a tourist town.
That makes it that much more interesting though, especially as it looks like this! That picture is the only reason so far for me including Chongqing…

Chongqing is the biggest city in the world and growing very fast. It became the capital of China after the Japanese invaded the country. The most beautiful place in China is the Li River. A boat trip down it is an unforgettable experience.
My favorite country in the region is Viet Nam and the Mekong Delta is especially interesting. The country is an interesting study in contrast. At China beach, the ocean side of the road is being built up with expensive villas and condos whereas the other side of the road is covered with slums. Who will live in the expensive digs? Government employees, party officials and others in the ruling class. Some workers’ paradise but this is Communism in action!

Guilin! Take a boat on the Li river, for one of the most mystical views you will ever see!

Oh how I miss Singapore…

-Eat at hawker centers, cheap delicious food (chicken rice, mee siam, laksa, thosai)
-Visit Chinatown, Boat Quay, Merlion, Sentosa Island, VivoCity, Orchard Road definitely
-Walk around Bedok Reservoir
-Night Safari

The nice thing about Singapore is that it is such a small place you can do a lot even if you only have a few days there! Just remember to abide by the laws, fines are hefty, even for things like spitting, or smoking in non-smoking areas.

China was awesome, had to skip the interior though as i lost my credit card and had to wait around in beijing.

guilin and the Li river cruise were totally amazing though. also Ha Long bay.

Now i’m in Vietnam and cruising around on this lovely Yamaha (never rode a bike before, but its so easy and so fun), stopping every now and then for an ice coffee or a swim. its lush.

so much left to do as well!
