Does wearing a hat amplify your chances of loosing your hair?

Asked by judochop (16119points) June 14th, 2010

I have been told that wearing a hat can cause you to loose your hair? Is this an old wives tale or is it true? I know I could go search for the scientific answer and find out but I want to hear what you all think about it.

In my case, I have always worn hats, including at work, and am now very shiny on top.
but I blame it on the vasectomy

Think about it, if you lay a tire on the grass won’t it leave a dead spot after a while. Well thats just what a hat will do to your hair.

I have a mixed answer. i wore a police cap for many years. i also wore a helmet for seven years when riding a police motorcycle. i still have a head full of hair. its grey, but its there and its mine. so, based on my past experiences, i would say male balding or losing ones hair is hereditary. my dad also wore a hat most of his life and died with a head full of hair. i guess you will have to judge for yourself. nothing scientific about experience.

I always heard the same thing as a kid, but besides being an old-wives tale I think it’s reverse logic. Bald people, at least when I was a kid, wore hats to cover the fact they were bald, so someone must’ve made the unreasonable jump that baldness was caused by wearing hats.

Male baldness is entirely genetic and is carried on the maternal gene, so to determine your likelihood of going bald, look at the men on your mother’s side of the family.

I think its true but I have no proof. Like @downtide pointed out it is usually genetic. However, since we perspire and loose a lot of body heat through our scalp I would think it wise not to make matters worse by sufficating you scalp. I know I tend to drop more hair in the summer when my head is hot. I think its because your pores are open and its easier for your hair to fall out. So if you are not the type to grow hair in quickly because you already have thin hair than I can see where wearing a hat will only speed up the baldness. Plus hat will rub and cause hair to break off. Think of when a baby sleeps a lot. They offen get a bald spot from laying on their back until they learn to role over and sleep other ways. Plus you skin needs the sun for general health. If your scalp isn’t healthy, than your hair certainly will pay the price.
