Looking for free online resources to learn Norwegian?

Asked by Unexpected_Rain (357points) June 15th, 2010

I recently decided that I would like to learn Norwegian. I have googled about a bit, but was wondering if anyone knows or has used any good online learning resources, especially those aimed at beginners.

Thanks!

I’ve heard a lot of great things about Live Mocha

@Unexpected_Rain Dad was Norwegian, yet I could not speak the language. One thing to remember is that the Scandinavian countries have had a profound effect on English due to the Viking age in Britain, and the sentence structure of Norwegian is almost exactly the same as English.

So what you could do is go to the Norwegian newspaper websites, and at the same time have an online Norwegian dictionary opened and start to find the words in English that you read in Norwegian. Some websites are: http://www.infonorway.com/?norway=dictionary/english-norwegian (dictionary) http://www.infonorway.com/?norway=language/dictionaries (useful list of Norwegian things including dictionaries) http://www.infonorway.com/?norway=dictionary/norwegian-english (another dictionary with some grammar hints) These references are all from my Favorites list.

As for newspapers try http://www.h-avis.no/ (Haugesund’s Avis. Avis means newspaper.) http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/norway.htm for a general listing of all Norwegian newspapers.

This may not have been what you were looking for, but I’m sure you will find it useful.

All the best,

Andreas.

@tranquilsea Thanks! I’ve just started looking at Livemocha and it looks like a great way to get me started. Especially with pronunciation :)

@Andreas The newspapers are a fantastic idea! I’ve been using Babelfish to compare words/sentances, but reading the language as it is meant to be is much more useful. Thank you!
