Morning sickness (without the pregnancy)

Asked by Chrissi85 (1070points) July 13th, 2010

First important detail, I am 100% not pregnant. Now that’s out the way.. Does anyone else throw up in the mornings? Pretty much every time I get up early (say, before 9am) I end up being violently sick. It’s been happening for quite a while now, a couple of years at least. I used to think it was because I was a lazy bum and getting up early just disagreed with me, but then I started working, and doing things, and generally being productive.. and it still happens. I’ve tried eating, nibbling dry biscuits before getting out of bed, boiled water, boiled water with mint/honey/etc. Does anyone have experience with this? It’s kinda making my life a misery as I have to get up extra early to make time to throw up.

Do you have a lot of allergies?

Chrissi85's avatar

Nope, not that I am aware of. I am allergic to large amounts of onion but I carefully monitor my food

Have you seen a doctor about this?

How odd. Have you talked to your doctor about this?

The first thing that came to my mind was some sort of “acid stomach” condition, where having an empty stomach (after that long period of time spent sleeping) causes nausea (I say that because we see this in dogs sometimes – they spit up on an empty stomach but still have appetite, and the whole issue resolves if they have more frequent meals).

My sister had something similar in college; she would wake up from a dead sleep, vomit violently, and then go right back to sleep. Her doctor diagnosed some sort of kidney issue that required that she eat a lower level of protein (sorry, it’s been a long time, and I’ve forgotten what it was called – it seemed rather obscure to me at the time).

I’d definitely consult your doctor.

No to be honest, I am a bit Doctor phobic. I know it’s silly, but I wanted a few opinions before I have to go through the whole getting-up-the-courage-routine. I have a whole bunch of things to see the doctor about, but I have an issue with them maybe thinking I am wasting their time, or being a hypochondriac. I have frequent meals, and try to keep them quite balanced. I got advised by a friend to eat some biscuits or toast before getting up to line my stomach, but it just gave me something scratchy to throw up.

@Chrissi85 This is definitely not a hypochondriac thing, this is a huge problem thing. Throwing up leads to dehydration, and over time can rot your teeth and cause serious heart problems. Think of the problems that bulimics have over time.

Does it make any difference what you have eaten or drunk and how late the night before? A nutritionist might also be worth consulting but I would start with a doctor.

See a doctor. I have heard of morning vomiting accompanying different problems like gall bladder and kidney problems. Read this:

I used to get that, turned out that I’m intolerant to dairy proteins (not lactose, which is dairy sugars). Eliminating milk eliminated the problem.

I’m not saying that it’s necessarily a dairy thing for you, but I would advise getting checked out for a range of dietary intolerances.

I keep thinking this over and I agree with downtide. I think it’s some type of allergy to something. Review your diet if you have an occurrence, but don’t exclude the environment as well. I have come across studies suggesting pregnant women’s morning sickness may be due to an allergy and the pregnancy makes them susceptible to something that normally doesn’t bother them. A doctor isn’t a bad step either.

Ok so everyone votes doctor cringe ok then. I really hope it’s not a dairy thing, because I’m not sure I could live without eating cheese hehe. I kinda thought that if it was an allergy it would present itself shortly after consuming whatever I was allergic to. Ok I shall gather my courage and go to the doctor, although I have to actually register with one first.

@Chrissi85 I believe there are pills you can take that mitigate the effects of a dairy intolerance so you might still be able to have some cheese, Grommit.

Chrissi85's avatar

Oooh it’s like they invented them for me. To be perfectly honest as well, I eat way too much dairy, and starchy foods. So yeah maybe I have just messed my system up a bit. Best to get checked anyway. Thanks for your advice guys =)

@Chrissi85 Phobia or not, you know what you need to do. Sorry sweetie but two years of this symptom is waiting too long.

Chrissi85's avatar

Yesh, I already said I will go =)

downtide's avatar

@Chrissi85 there’s a lactaid supplement that allows people with lactose intolerance to continue eating dairy products.

Well hopefully it wont come to that, but at least I wont have to go without cheese hehe
