Super weird question... How do you gargle?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) July 16th, 2010

Last question about me being sick, I swear.

So I have this uber mouthwash with lidocaine that I’m supposed to gargle with. It effectively numbs the back of my mouth, but it doesn’t do much for my throat. That makes me think I’m not gargling right. Am I actually supposed to let the stuff go down further? When I tried, it set off my gag reflex or I thought I was going to swallow it, which I’m not supposed to do.

Am I not gargling correctly?

I just let it slide to the back of my throat, and then gargle show tunes. Why?because it makes me happy ;)

Maybe I could gargle Lady Gaga and it would distract me from gagging. LOL

I just looked up lidocaine, and it sounds like it was a.) something prescribed, and b.) something you don’t want to ingest by accident.

How about practicing your gargling technique with water. You might want to even add a bit of salt. Even if it makes a difference, I can’t imagine it will be by much. If it doesn’t provide the desired effect, it’s probably best to call your doctor.

I tilt my head back to allow whatever it is I’m gargling get to the back and then gargle. It took a bit of getting use to when I learned how to do it though, so I’d definitely practice with water before trying the prescription stuff.

I was able to soothe the right side of my throat, but not so much the left.
