What CD/album by a major artist do you feel is really great, but has been overlooked by more popular sellers?

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) July 16th, 2010

Sometimes major artists will breakout with really great songs and the ones that get airplay (or are picked up by films) are what become popular. But what about obscure or less well-known CD’s/albums by well-known artists that you feel are brilliant, but not as well known and worth a listen?

For example, “Songs for the New Depression” was not a very popular album by Bette Midler when it was released. A throwback to the 40’s with some old re-styled classics, it is Bette at her best. (That’s one I thought of off the top of my head.)

What are your favorites and forgottens?

The Hazards of Love by the Decemberists is one of the most awesome albums I’ve ever heard but it’s not uber popular or well known by any stretch. Give it a listen.

Most traditional jazz.
A pity that an entire genre of music—once popular—has become so marginalized in the consumer market.

I second @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard on the Hazards of Love. It’s a great concept album with interweaving plotlines. Very fun.

Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut. Better than the Wall, which I adore.
