How do I get started making websites?

Asked by tablack01 (313points) August 1st, 2010

I want to start designing and constructing a website based on an idea I have had for a while. What is the best way to start creating it on my own? What is HTML5 and should/can I incorporate this if I am a novice? I had several coding classes in college and feel that I am comfortable with the logic that coding follows. Any recommendations for books or software?

Well, in school we made websites in Notepad using HTML, but I forgot all the specifics. ;]

Otherwise, I think it depends on the type of site you’re looking to make. If it’s a blog, there are certain sites that let you do all the coding and everything, but you just have to buy a domain name.

Hmm, I looked for online resources for you to look at, but didn’t find anything extremely helpful, so I’d advise going to your local library and just skimming through all the books about websites and picking some out there! :]

All you need to know. Ever.

@dverhey I wouldn’t go that far, but w3schools is definitely a good place to start. I have a lot of issues with them—I find the design ugly and unintuitive and I hate that the HTML tutorial is a prerequisite for the HTML5 and XHTML tutorials…—but they are the most comprehensive beginner’s resource I’ve found. Once you’ve gotten a little more advanced, you’ll want to browse better resources such as A List Apart, 24 ways, et. al.

@lapilofu Agreed. But for just starting you can make a very good website using their site.

I hear you about the design as well, it just doesn’t seem to make sense for a HTML tutorial site to have such an ugly design.

On paper! Don’t start before you know exactly what you want to end up with! Imagine and calculate all the sizes/margins/paddings/alignments etc before you type anything in your HTML editor!
