How smart are rats?

Asked by wundayatta (58722points) August 13th, 2010

There is a rat infestation in my city right now, according to the guy at the hardware store. He says rats have been moving inside early this year, but he didn’t say why.

Anyway, we set a regular mousetrap style rat trap, and so far, it has been sprung twice but we have not caught a rat. The guy says that rats are smart, so catch them the first time, or you’re in trouble. I guess we’re in trouble.

Anyone have a better rat trap? Any other suggestions?

I suggest a large, hungry, mean cat.

We’re allergic to cats. We bought a havahart trap. The kids are not happy about having to kill the rat after we catch it. We haven’t caught it yet.

@ratboy – hehehehe sorry ratboy.

@wundayatta – feline allergy does present a problem. I am with your kids, I hate killing the things, take it out to the country and turn it loose. But first put a band on its leg to see if it finds its way back to your house. That will give you a good indication of its intelligence or at the least its homing capabilities.
