Would you or do you dress your animal in clothes?

Asked by Frenchfry (7591points) August 19th, 2010

I find it funny that people actually humiliated the animal like that. YES! I am guilty. I bought a halloween costume for my dog, Dot Dot. She was a devil. I took pictures. She looked not too happy in any. I even put reindeer antlers on her, and made her sit by the Christmas tree. Have you ever done that ,or do you consider it cruel?

I don’t consider it cruel. I have never done it. I don’t think either the dog or I would enjoy the process of getting him dressed.

As long as they don’t cause any distress or harm to the animal, I am not against what they choose to do to their pet. If they were… pinning the animal to the floor and forcing a too-small article of clothing on the animal that cuts into its circulation or something… then I would have a bone to pick with them.

Personally? I think it’s silly. My Aunt Diane has a swim suit, “hoochie dress” (her words not mine), shoes, a tutu, pyjamas… all for her toy poodle. Her excuse is always “she’s naked without them!” or “she’s cold!” which I do not understand at all.

Not clothes, but during Christmas holidays, my cat Sy alternates between a ribbon and bow around his neck and a velcro tie. I won’t say he likes these ensembles, but he tolerates them.

ucme's avatar

Nah, she came with a beautiful coat thrown in for free.

gypsywench's avatar

If I dressed up my cat, she would never forgive me.

Seaofclouds's avatar

We never put our dogs in costumes, but they did have sweaters for in the winter (this was when I was a kid).

Austinlad's avatar

@ucme, GREAT answer. I smiled out loud.

ucme's avatar

@Austinlad Do you know what? I heard it from here ;¬}

I do have a neoprene swim vest that I put on my dog when it gets cold and we are hunting open water. He didn’t like it at first, but then he realized it kept him warm and helped him float, he loves it now.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

I consider it selfish, you make your pets do things they don’t like for your own benefits.
If the animal likes it though than go for it.

Squeeky's avatar

Uh no,but I have seen it done rather neatly,and as long as it doesn’t stress the animal ,I see no harm in it at all. :)

JilltheTooth's avatar

No, but I once dyed a small white dog with food coloring for July 4th. Red in front, blue in back, left the middle white. He loved all the attention!

daytonamisticrip's avatar

Some dogs and cats will lose their fur if you do that….so I’ve heard any way.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Never heard that, myself, and he stayed hairy for the rest of his long life.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

Either your lucky or it’s just a myth, most likely a myth.

JilltheTooth's avatar

I’m thinking myth, I’ve been heavily involved in the whole dog thing for half a century and never heard anything about it. But, and OH it pains me to admit this I don’t know everything so I’ll look into it, now I’m curious.

Blondesjon's avatar

No. I don’t celebrate holidays with them or get them holiday themed gifts.

they wouldn’t understand. they’re dogs.

ucme's avatar

I must confess I do like doggie style….....but that’s a whole different story altogether ;¬}

Your_Majesty's avatar

No. What is the purpose of their fur then?

WestRiverrat's avatar

@JilltheTooth and @daytonamisticrip I think it may happen if the animal is allergic to something in the food coloring. But it is an extremely rare occurance.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@WestRiverrat ; Possibly,but food coloring is pretty benign, so I figured it was safe. I guess allergies are always a possibility.

Frenchfry's avatar

@ucme Oh ! thanks I went from thinking about putting a shirt on my dog to sex. hee hee very funny.

ucme's avatar

@Frenchfry Wouldn’t he prefer pants? :¬D

daytonamisticrip's avatar

Well i heard it from my brother years ago. He also thought that everyday someone throws a tennis ball that’s on fire into the sky and that’s the sun.

perspicacious's avatar

Not since I was a kid and dressed the cat in doll clothes.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@daytonamisticrip : Ah. An unimpeachable source. I bow to your brother’s wisdom. ;-)

daytonamisticrip's avatar

He also thought to grow a tree you had to plant a stick.

chyna's avatar

My first boxer had more clothes than I did. Leather jacket, tye died shirt, WV shirt, Cowboys shirt, superman outfit, etc. He didn’t seem to mind, but I won’t do that again.
@JilltheTooth Years ago, my dad sharpened clipper blades that the dog grooming places used. This one lady used to come by the house with 2 standard poodles that she had dyed one pink and one purple using food coloring. The name of her place was the “Purple Pampered Poodle Palace”. She always kept them dyed and they lived for a long time.

No….

When me and my sister were younger we’d sometimes dress our cats in our old baby clothes. It felt so cute to pick them up like that, hehe. Mostly they’d just sit on the floor and fall over on their sides if they started moving with the clothes on, it was funny.

But no, we didn’ torture them, it probably sounds worse than what it was. Anyway, we don’t do it anymore. We did it so seldom anyway that i can probably count the times on my one hand.

gypsywench's avatar

@NaturallyMe I did that to my cats when I was a child once as well. Once dressed they would just fall over on their sides. I felt really bad, as I recall. Cute as hell.

naconasong's avatar

I bought a Santa hat for Yasha but I just put her Christmas treats in it from Santa! Then I hung it on the Christmas Tree. She would never allow me to do that to her. I do think that if the dog is put in clothing from the time they are very small they get used to it and it is not so bad for them. A German Shepherd or a big dog though looks silly in clothing!

Jude's avatar

Maybe, a little sombrero.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I don’t, both my dogs have a perfectly good fur coat of their own and they are both quite hardy dogs so I don’t need to dress them in little jumpers to keep them warm or anything. I am not one for novelty dog clothing and I know my Jack Russell certainly wouldn’t be happy about it if I were, the Staffy would probably tolerate it as she’s a bit more chilled out than the JRT.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@Leanne1986 : The Tazmanian Devil is probably a bit more chilled than your JRT. I love those little guys!(JRTs)

OpryLeigh's avatar

@JilltheTooth You got that right. Bella (my JRT) is determined to make sure the world knows that she exists. Talk about small persons syndrome!!! I wouldn’t change her for the world though and she’s a sassy little thing.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@Leanne1986 : Well, my middle initial isn’t R but being a short person myself I so identify!

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I don’t believe in putting my pet in outfits other than a coat for warmth or rain protection and sometimes shoes to keep his feet from getting burned on hot pavement or excessively cold on wet ground. My dog is a Pomeranian, he’s bred to be a “pet”, an ornament of love though he’s not a dog-dog, he doen’t deserve doll or stuffed toy status.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@JilltheTooth At 5’0, so do I!

chyna's avatar

@Leanne1986 I absolutely tower over you. I’m 5’2.

Frenchfry's avatar

@chyna @Leanne1986 Well I tower over all ya’ all 5 foot four hee hee

chyna's avatar

@Frenchfry I’d love to be 5’4. Clothes would fit me better.

happy123's avatar

i dont consider it cruel, but if you see that the dog doesnt even want to walk when having it on take it off and if they feel comfortable and is totally fine with it leave it on.:P

dabbler's avatar

Some animals love the attention and don’t mind the unnatural stuff hung on their bodies. For them, it’s party time!

However most animals I know would rather have nothing to do with getting dressed up.
Leave ‘em be !

With a little photoshop, any animal can appear to be dressed for the occasion w/o having to actually put up with some zany human’s idea of fun.
