time to look at this question a different way. How many people died last year of a marijuana overdose? How many people where hospitalized for the same? In the United States I believe that that number would be less than 00000001% of the using population.

Breathing kills brain cells
Brain cells are always dying, as are every other cell in your body.

Cannabis sativa has low toxicity (so not significantly deadly to cells) – but that does not mean it has no negative effects. Burning something and smoking it does however – depending on what. Expect a reduction in memory function with long term use, personality change and the related. Of course really depends on the variety and actual chemical state of the product one uses. Breed, storage conditions and use conditions all change the end-chemical state and also the end-effects with the respective side-effects.

Yes it can, but not for the reason you might suspect. It will kill brain cells because as you inhale your body is getting less oxygen. In particular if you’re inhaling from a bong you are getting mostly marijuana smoke. This lack of oxygen will kill brain cells. In this respect, marijuana is actually more harmful than cigarette smoke (of course when you look at the harmful additives in cigarettes marijuana quickly becomes significantly safer).

As far as the chemicals having adverse effects on your brain cells and body in general, yes they can. But no more (or at least not much more) than any other chemical you probably put into your body on a daily basis.

Smoking anything will kill brain cells. It’s not he mary jane that kills most of the cells its the lack of oxygen to the brain. Just make brownies!!

They regenerate, don’t they? I guess we have enough to spare.lol

@thecassiewelch Many, many things that grow in the ground can kill us, There are all natural neurotoxins that kill our brain cells.

@tedd You will not get brain damage from lack of oxygen in this case. Brain damage from lack of oxygen occurs only after a few minutes of no oxygen, you will have passed out first.

Marijuana is one of the safest drugs, especially if you receive it from a method other than smoking.

tedd's avatar

@jackm You are incorrect, taking in “tainted” air, or air with less oxygen content does in fact kill brain cells. Thats why “huffing paint, or glue” will also kill brain cells. Anytime you get light headed, you are literally losing brain cells.

I wonder what the difference is between losing brain cells and being brain damaged? You can tell by looking and/or listening to a person who’s brain damaged but I would imagine that most of us have lost a lot of brain cells though nitrous oxide, alcohol, smoking, aging? watching Judge Judy, etc. without apparent effects. now, where are my car keys?

Cannabinoids have been shown to kill cells that were weak or cancerous but leave healthy cells alone completely.

Aster's avatar

So you’re saying marijuana cures brain cancer?

CMaz's avatar

First I heard of it. LOL

LOL ! Boy; some people have quite a creative imagination! gimme a good link and I’ll retract

@Aster Brain cells do not regenerate (they are not mitotic). There’s been speculation for years that Mary Jay kills or harms brain cells, but recent research has been suggesting otherwise.

It’s supposed to make your axon-endings weaker, which effects your senses over time. Supposed to be the explanation behind pot heads being so dopey.

I’ve about given up on the “experts” since they constantly change their minds!

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Aster I just read it in June 19th addition of Science News. According to the article the study was done by Biochemists Guillermo Velasco and Manuel Guzman of Compluntense University in Madrid and published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation in 2009.

I see that. So it kills the tumor cells but it won’t get rid of brain tumors visible with the naked eye. Actually, I’m not surprised it can kill the cells. Not at all.
Tragically, a good friend of mine who smoked a lot got cancer and it traveled to her brain and killed her. So it may be dose-related. And not fool-proof. Important to investigate, though. GA

jackm's avatar

@tedd Yes, huffing paint does kill brain cells, but through a different process, not from lack of oxygen. Marijuana has never been shown to kill any brain cells.

Disc2021's avatar

@Aster The problem is people believing in every article they read online, not on the so called “experts” themselves. Empirical sciences exists as a process, not as a foolproof, solid document accessible on wikipedia.

It can sure kill the bathroom after an evening of binge eating.

laysha's avatar

Boy yeah it dont really matter cause people are still going to smoke it anyway. Just like crack, drinking, and smoking cigerates. People just dont care.

desiree333's avatar

Absolutely not! Even if you smoke regularly and heavily. The main component of cannabis; delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) kills aging cells and keeps them from becoming cancerous and stimulates the creation of new brain cells (neurogenesis).
