What year was expiration dates enforced on food products?

In Germany, that is.

Except for some baby food products, there is no Federal Law regulating product dating. Various states have passed laws over the years, at different time for different foods. There is no uniform or universally accepted method of dating.

The beer and wine industry started voluntary product dating in the 1980’s, but again, there is no industry wide standard.
