What do I do with this turkey/ham?

Asked by tedd (14078points) November 22nd, 2010

At my job they give out a gift coupon thing for a free turkey or ham up to $20 in value every Thanksgiving. I have the coupon, but honestly I don’t know wtf to do with it. I could give it to my mother/family, but I don’t think they need it. I could use it myself, but I’m never going to eat $20 of turkey or ham before it goes bad, not to mention all the left overs i’ll probably have after Thanksgiving. I’m debating getting it and giving it to charity or something, but I’m not really sure how to go about doing that.

Anyone have suggestions or advice or what not?

Look for a local food bank or food pantry to donate it to. There should be a listing on the Net or in the Yellow Pages.

There are many food drives going on at this time of year sponsored by local entities. My apartment complex is having one. One of the local TV stations is, a local hospital is.

Just check the newspapers or the Web for food drives with your location.

Or just give it to a charity that feeds people. Salvation Army for example.

Any churches in your area? Many churches run food drives and/or soup kitchens where they can feed the homeless a traditional holiday dinner. Even your supermarket might have information about this.

I would donate it to a soup kitchen :)

Is there a Ronald McDonald house in your area? The one here prepares dinner for the residents every night, which can get expensive.

Give it to me or freeze it and throw it at an enemy. Unless of course, I am that enemy :-)

Any local food bank, homeless shelter and probably senior center would be glad to have your gift certificate. You may also be able to donate it directly to the Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Or if you really want to be a peach and know that one of your neighbors is not in the best financial situation, you could give it to them (just don’t let on that you know they are in a poor financial situation) just tell them that you couldn’t possible eat that much turkey.

Now for you sir, I would suggest a nice turkey breast and some Trader Joe’s already prepared, refrigerated side dishes (like green bean casserole, Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes or stuffing) so you can still have a nice Thanksgiving meal, with a few left-overs, but not a ridiculous amount that you’d have to throw out. And get a slice or 2 of pie at Marie Callender’s or Bakers Square.

Ronald McDonald House is a good idea. You could also contact your local missions/soup kitchens to see if they accept donations of fresh food.

I have to admit that when I first read your question’s title, I thought you meant “I don’t know if this is turkey or ham and I don’t know what to do with it! Help!”
