Who is the stupidest congressional representative?

Asked by josie (30934points) December 13th, 2010

Earlier this year, it would have to have been Hank Johnson, rep from Georgia 4.
In hearings, he told the USCOMPAC that he was concerned that adding military personnel to the island of Guam might make the island capsize.
But has anybody done anything since then that would relieve Hank of the distinction of stupidest rep?

I would have to say Jim Bunning, but Rand Paul, his replacement may beat him for that distinction. Actually, Rand Paul is quite smart, but more than a little crazy.

josie's avatar

@BarnacleBill Bunning is a Senator, and I was operating on the assumption that congressional house reps would provide better fuel for the fire, but fair enough.

In the interest of bipartisan fairness, I present to you a dumbass Democrat and a dumbass Republican.

These are by no means the worst of the worst, though, just the first ones that came to mind for me.

josie's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard And I appreciate your bipartisan fairness. But just what is the specific thing that makes each a candidate. I think I can guess, but it would be nice to know what inspired you to nominate them.

How about Nancy “We have to pass the bills to find out what’s in it” Pelosi? ;)

TexasDude's avatar

@josie, well, for Carolyn, it’s her whole “we should ban guns because they have the shoulder thing that goes up” schtick that proves to me how profoundly ignorant she is. For Michele, it’s her bizarre obsession with the private lives of gay people that consolidates her dumbfuckery in my mind. Basically, I view any intrusion into the private lives of individuals as “stupid,” and in my view, both of these folks would gladly do so in spades, just in different ways.

Michelle Bachmann is the first to spring to mind.

In July, Shirley Jackson Lee, D, Texas, “I stand here asking us to do what we did not in do in Vietnam, was to recognize the valiant and outstanding service of our men and women,” Jackson Lee said on the House floor yesterday, “and to understand that victory had been achieved.
“Today, we have two Vietnams, side by side, North and South, exchanging and working. We may not agree with all that North Vietnam is doing, but they are living in peace. I would look for a better human rights record for North Vietnam, but they are living side by side.”

She also wanted to see photos of the earth taken by the first man who landed on Mars.

Pete Stark, D, California, everytime he opens his mouth.

Bernie Sanders, I, Vermont, an avowed Socialist, on Dec. 10, filibustering the tax plan, asked a question, “To the rich crybabies, when is enough enough.”

Well, Mr. Sanders, as an American who believes in the US Constitution and the Republic form of government, I ask you, when is enough enough of your wasteful spending. You are part of an entity that takes 3 trillion of produced wealth every year- spend it…and it is not enough. How much more do you want?
To every Representative with their lifetime pensions, lifetime insurance, six figure incomes and millionaires in the Congress making rules for the “little people” who elected them to represent us, when is enough, enough?

Sorry, lost my train of thought on the question for a moment.

On the other side of the aisle, during the 2008 Presidential campaign Sen. Harry Reid, D, Nev., said America would vote for Barack Obama because he was a “light-skinned” African-American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

Well, that’s just a few off the top of my head. Remember when Obama said he’d already visited 57 states and had one more to go?

Maxine Waters always pops up when I think of stupid Congress members. And now, when I think of GOP members, Michelle Bachmann comes up. These two should be backbenchers that no one should know about, but their ability to open their mouths without thinking keeps them in the news.

JLeslie's avatar

@bkcunningham that is a pretty good list. Except, I have to say I will never understand why so many people got all over Harry Reid for that particular comment. It was said behind closed doors, supporting Harry Reid, and probably everyone in politics, sociology, and marketing talks like that. Using terms to identify groups is shorthand for whatever is trying to be conveyed. Now, I agree negro is a pretty out of date term, but there was no malice in his statement. If he had said anything regarding him being articulate, or put it any other way, they would have jumped all over him still. Former Black presidential candidates had more of a black preacher tone in their delivery, think Jesse Jackson, which is less appealing to the masses probably.

All government workers get pension plans congressional rules are the same as anyone else who works for our government. I assume the healthcare is the same for all government workers also. Not to be confused with our military who have purely socialized medicine run by our government/military, with an option to go outside of the system when needed.

bkcunningham's avatar

He was saying Americans were ready to embrace the first black president, especially one like Obama because he appeared more caucasian as opposed to, in Reid-speak, a stereotypical black man. Reid was saying Obama appeared white enough. I think the complaints, besides the obvious bigotry of the statements, were the double standards applied to Reid by people who use the race card at their convenience.

Wasn’t it Biden who said something about Obama being a “clean and articulate?”

Elected representatives aren’t considered “government employees.”

JLeslie's avatar

@bkcunningham it might have been Biden. I comment on people who are articulate no matter what color they are. Biden did not say artculate for a black guy, everyone else did. We commented on Bush not being articulate all of the time, we did not say he screws up his language like black men. Biden’s comment is not about race in my opinion, but for sure Harry’s was a comment about his color and the American people. We all comment on our Jelly Jeruba, being our resedent expert on the English language, if it turns out she is African American does that make us all racist for commenting on her strong command of the language?

What do you mean elected representatives aren’t considered government employees? They are paid by the government? We elect them, hire them, into our government.

IchtheosaurusRex's avatar

I’m going to go with Joe ‘I Apologize’ Barton.

It’s hard to imagine anybody so out of touch with the sentiments of the country as this idiot at this moment.

bkcunningham's avatar

@JLeslie, regarding Joe Biden: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” Not about race? Sure if that is what you believe.

If your resident English language expert is black and you want to persuade others of her strong command of the English language by saying she has caucasion attributes or seems less black, I’d say that is pretty racist.

Congress isn’t employees in the sense of working for a business or industry. Congress is one branch of our government with duties in the US Constitution Article I, section 8, Think about your statement, “they are paid by the government” and we hire them into our government. What is this “government” you speak of that pays them and hires them?

The government is us. We, the people. The preamble to the US Constitution explains it better than I can. We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The Congress is us, our representatives in this republic who swear under oath to uphold this Constitution and their duties. It isn’t an employee role in the sense of the word you used comparing them to the military and other federal workers.

JLeslie's avatar

@bkcunningham Oh, haha, you win on Biden, that was not a good thing to say. I still don’t think he is racist at all, just talking about Obama’s atributes, but it was bad.

I think we disagree on the congress thing. Way back in the beginnings of our country I am assuming our representatives spent less time doing service for the country, because we were smaller. Now it is more of a full time job. Personally I am not in favor of life time politicians, I think terms should be limited, but I am ok with after a break, someone returning to politics. But, while they are serving us, the people, they are paid, and should be. That makes sense to me. We could argue they make too much money maybe? And if they were not allowed to be career poliicians, as I have said, pensions would probably be a non-issue, because they would not be in office long enough to earn one.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Let’s not forget this ridiculous comment by Hank Johnson. I can’t believe people actually voted for that idiot. TWICE.

josie's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate like my mama always said, “Stupid is as stupid does”.
Regarding Hank-He is starting to reveal a disturbing pattern. He may actually be organically stupid.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@josie I honestly think he’s on something.

“So, Mr. Johnson, do you get stoned on a regular basis?”

“Uhh no, uuuuh, because uhhhhh, that may uhhhhh cause Guam to uhhhhh tip over and capsize uhhhh, and we all know that uhhh, that uhhhh, would be a horrible uhhhh turn of uhhhh, events for uhhhh the uhhhh black community and uhhhhh we all uhhhhh know that only people who wear uhhhhh white hoods and white uhhhh outfits participate in uhhhhh activities involving uhhhhh getting stoned.”

bkcunningham's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I’m not defending Johnson’s intelligence, but his speech, according to Johnson, is being affected by medication he’s taking while battling hepatitis C.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@bkcunningham Riiiiiiiight. I could claim that I’ve said/done ignorant things or slurred my speech because I’m constantly on pills to ease the pain of my own illness. But that would just be an excuse.

Winters's avatar

@bkcunningham I’m very skeptical about that. I know a couple people dealing with Hep C and I have never seen them be affected to anything near to the extent Johnson claimed to be.
