Mattress Recommendations?

Asked by Itsaboutme (399points) February 4th, 2011

I am looking for a new mattress, one that doesn’t require being turned and flipped.

I’m starting to do research on the sleep number bed. If I already have box springs and frame that I love do I still need to purchase the foundation?

We have a Tempur-Pedic which we like, but it’s expensive.

I used to sell mattresses. Please see my very long answers to this question.

Welcome to Fluther.

Without trying to discredit or downplay any of @hawaii_jake‘s advice, because I certainly don’t have his experience, I’ve never slept as well as I have on my Sleep Number™ bed from Select Comfort. I’ve owned it for about four years now, and it has been the best bed that I’ve ever slept on, bar none.

I only wish that I had owned it earlier in my life, because in addition to being so comfortable (selectively, because I don’t always ‘set it and forget it’) it’s also much simpler to move, since it disassembles and can be moved in a passenger car (which is how I got it home from the store in the first place, as I bought mine as a closeout / demo).

They are pretty pricey, though.

A cheaper way to make a bed great is by getting some memory foam. It’s made any bed I’ve had amazing.

A hard surface is on what we evolved to sleep. All my life I had back problems, waking up sore, until I spent a year living in a tent and sleeping rough on the ground. My back problems cleared right up. Today I refuse to sleep on anything softer than a futon. Mattresses make me feel like I’m smothering on top of a giant marshmallow. Try sleeping for a few weeks right on the ground and you’ll never want to sleep on a mattress again.

I work at a furniture store that sells mattresses and from what I’ve been taught, Tempur-Pedics are some of the best matresses out there. Again, that could be the company trying to get me to sell the most expensive bed (and they are really expensive) but people still buy them and doctors recommend them. The one thing that I have noticed is that Tempur-Pedic beds are different from other beds with memory foam that try compete. I also like latex beds or innerspring beds with latex in them. If I were to get an innerspring bed, I would get a Serta Perfect sleeper or Perfect day if your looking for something more luxurious. I’ve gotten lots of complaints about Stearns and Foster beds sagging and not being as comfortable after a few months. Well whatever you decide, good luck!

I’ve always been interested in a Tempur-pedic, but haven’t slept on one. I was impressed they have a 90 day guarantee, you can return it if it doesn’t work for you.

I travel a bit for work, the best mattress I have ever slept on is at the Weston Hotels, and you can buy their mattresses and bedding. But it is pricey.
