A news reporter risks his life to get this information to us. Is this what courage is?

Asked by skfinkel (13537points) March 5th, 2011

This is an amazing clip of a man who is risking his life to make sure the world sees what is happening in Libya. The video is embedded in the article. To me, this takes tremendous courage.

Cowardly Lion: Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the “ape” in apricot? What have they got that I ain’t got?

@gailcalled, the video is embedded in the article, the first image of a man, on the left. Blurred, because it’s sent makeshift satellite, as the internet is shut off in Libya.

In reading the linked articles, it sounds like the US and the UN are heading for establishing a no-fly zone. The Libyan army fired on protesters in front of international journalists.

@BarnacleBill: Thank you. It is still astonishing to me that we can see this footage halfway around the world. And there is no way any longer to lie; the eyes and ears are witnesses to everything.

Thanks for the clarification: the video is in the article. It is amazing, that this is going on, that they are able (and willing) to risk their lives to show us what is happening.

@filmfann Probably this generation’s best lyricist: Paul Simon. And Graceland was a great album – maybe one of the 10 best of all time?

IMO people who face serious illness, debilitating disease and imminent death who hold their head up high and not be bitter about the cards they were dealt, exemplifies the epitome of courage. ;)

btw, I didn’t mean to make light of a horrifying war—just reacting to a short, unanswered question (which has since been re-worded, I think) with frivolity and flippancy. The silence was deafening. Who invited him? ~

I finally found the video under discussion. Yes, the news team is courageous. Even more so the rebel fighters. I’m not following developments closely (no play-by-play, just game recaps and standings) but major instabilities like this, played out on the world stage, always make me nervous. Especially given humanity’s short attention span with war atrocities.

@seazen Graceland is on my personal most-played list. Simon’s albums have always been well-recorded, too.

It is courageous but life is too precious I think just for information… for a higher purpose perhaps
