How to make an astroturf suit and flower costumes?

Asked by BarnacleBill (16123points) May 19th, 2011

I need to make a suit out of astroturf and a flower costume. Any suggestions how to construct these outfits?

Looking for hints/tips.

I think that the best way might be to glue (using fabric glue) patches of astroturf to an undersuit. Sort of like sodding a yard.

Because astroturf itself requires special thread to sew it together and is too think to work in a regular sewing machine.

I agree with @marinelife , think about shingles on the roof of your house. Glue them onto a rain coat from the thrift shop. Use fabric glue other types may not hold.

Correction: thick not think.

I’d pick the thinnest astroturf-type material you can find. If you go the shingles way, you may want to forget glue and punch holes through and use those split pins, (I think they’re called Brads in English). You could use hot glue to attach the flowers to the astroturf.

These look interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Pv853iQa2c

Did somebody just see True Stories?

You might consider using velcro as a fastener. That way you could cut out 2 or 3 sections, that would fit around your body, then use the fasteners as the way to close it up, rather than attempting to sew any of it. Then you could use smaller tabs of velcro to attach the fake flowers. You can get some really beautiful fake flowers at Michael’s Craftstores if they have those near you.

@BarnacleBill Can we see a photo of you wearing the resulting costume?

I would write to Karl Rove with this one.

@AstroChuck, LOL, no, but I was at a meeting where we were talking about how to increase having people sign up for a gardening promotion, and I suggested The Suit. I think I was one of two at the meeting who had ever seen True Stories. The others were either too old or too young. I used to do some costuming work, but this has me puzzled because of the weight.

@cazzie, great video, with some good construction thoughts. I would love to claim those young people as my own!
