Would your search- and browser history put you in trouble?

Asked by rebbel (35549points) May 26th, 2011

I saw a TV show some days ago about a murder case and the probable killer that was on the streets still despite a truck load of circumstantial evidence.
Amongst that evidence were data from his cellphone and his PC, like browser- and search history.
My question: If one of your neighbors went missing and the police, for whatever reason, came to your door to investigate you, would you be worried whether your search- and browser history and -behavior would get you into trouble (for example you searched for Duct tape and bin bags)?
But you didn’t have anything to do with the going missing of that neighbor.

I suppose if I lived in the same house with a minor, my searches for kinky sex might (don’t worry, I’m not into animals or kid porn) :-p

And being an erotic/sf/horror writer, I google around for a lot of weird shit all the time :-p

It is doubtful. Most of what I search on the web when it comes to news is either out of date or recently reported on the news. A couple of weeks ago, an ambulance showed up in front of a neighbor’s house a few times, and I still have no clue what happened, as I haven’t spoken to them, nor looked it up online.

I know what you mean though. After reading about incidents where people are put on the suspect list due to what crops up on their computers, it is no surprise that they are investigated in great detail.

Yes I’d be worried because the very fact they want to check my computer means I’m a suspect. Anything in my browser history, however innocent, might potentially link me to the crime. I would want to help the police with their enquiries but I don’t want them snooping around my personal stuff.

Hmm, let’s see.

Porn, gun websites, and fluther.

Yeah, I’d be fucked.

Nope, mine is pretty tame.

I would just get in trouble if my hubby realized just how much time I “waste” on fluther and facebook. Otherwise, my history is pretty clean.

Russian news, various weapon websites, Fluther, and Facebook.

Probably not.

hmmm, are you planning a crime @rebbel, with all these questions? haha

Unless a history of Allrecipes, Fluther, TWC and Facebook will get me in trouble, I don’t think so.

You know it’s funny, I thought about that a few weeks ago when I was trying to assist a few different people on Fluther with some pretty serious topics. So I was talking with these jellies and posting links (that I had searched on Google) like suicide prevention hotline and how to treat anorexia nervosa and what is sexual addiction and a page that was a rash identifyer.

Later on, I thought to myself, if I kicked the bucket today or this week, or even this month (like during the rapture or something) my family would be horrified at some of the things that I have looked up, and they would have no idea that it was on behalf of my suffering fellow jellies and that the topics had nothing to do with me at all.

But if they looked at it this week, they’d wonder why on earth I needed 25 recipes for different ways to cook parsnips. They might think that was even crazier! Like maybe I have some sort of sick parsnip addiction.

I’m not trying to be unhelpful with this; it’s truly my honest answer to the question: I have absolutely no idea. Laws surrounding what we consider good, bad, or ugly seem to change weekly, and often seem to make little sense. So I genuinely don’t have a clue whether there’d be a problem or not. I don’t think so, but we live in a world where a kid was expelled from high school for having a butter knife in the bed of his pickup truck. So common sense clearly doesn’t always rule the day… ;-)

What things do our cell phones keep on file? I delete all of my texts right away. Can they still be retrieved? If you remove your history of phone calls, does that keep them from being recovered? And what about your browser history on the phone? Where is that kept?

@wundayatta It’s all there, waiting to be found. Even if it’s deleted.

Nah. It’s just a bunch of flutherin’ and facebookin’ and web comics. Pretty tame.

Nope. Well, except for this joint. I have no idea what the cops’d think after seeing this place! ;)

Fluther. Porn. Fluther. Porn. Fluther. Porn. Pluther. Florn. Fluther. Porn.

Nope. I’m Safe.

Legally? No.

Though I might have some ‘splainin’ to do if Mr. Fiance checked out my history. I’ll search for all kinds of things when I’m trying to help someone here, or if I’m intrigued by someone’s question or answer. “Hon? Why are you searching for battered women’s resources? Jock itch? Gun laws?”
