Based on some of my musical interests, can you recommend some artists to me?

Asked by answerjill (6198points) June 1st, 2011

I know that Pandora and other services can do something similar, but I would rather depend on my fellow Flutherers. I tend to like music that hits somewhere at the intersection of country, rock, and folk. A couple of my favorites: Josh Ritter, Bright Eyes, Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams. I especially like songs that tell a story. Any ideas? Thanks!

Not sure whether it matches the artists you mentioned but this Robbie Robertson song does tell a story.

Based on your list of artists, and your inclination to country/rock/folk, Carrie Newcomer would be my recommendation to you. It’s a fusion of all three, and she always tells a story in her songwriting.

Neil Young is one of my personal favorites, he blends southern rock, rock, and folk together very well. Plus, he can perform them all separately like a boss! If you have nine minutes to kill, I recommend listening to this song, which tells a neat story.

@Neurotic_David – I loove Carrie Newcomer! She is my favorite female singer-songwriter!

Two Canadian artists you need to know: Leslie Feist and Tegan and Sara.

Also, stuff from Elvis Costello’s last two albums (as well as everything else that guy has done) might float your boat. Check out From Sulfur to Sugarcane to start with.

Dude, look into Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and Young). Bob Dylan, too. Folk rock at some of its finest.

Never heard of the people you just listed, but Joy Division is always a great band to listen to.

I like Brandi Carlile. Here she is singing The Story. She stands right at the intersection you mentioned.

I also like Lady Antebellum. Here is their “Need You Now.”

The Desert Rose Band’s She Don’t Love Nobody and The Story of Love

The Laurel Canyon Ramblers

Suzy Bogguss’s Hey Cinderella and Someday Soon

Kathy Mattea’s Coal Tatoo

Iris Dement’s Our Town

Donovan’s Catch the Wind

The Flying Burrito Brothers’s Juanita

And anything by Glenn Campbell, America, CSN&Y, The Association, The Four Freshman, Peter Paul and Mary, Arlo Guthrie, The Mama’s and the Papa’s, and Poco

And the soundtrack from the movie A Mighty Wind

You should look into some folk punk bands. Defiance, Ohio, Paul Baribeau, Spoonboy, and Ghost Mice. They are similar to Bright Eyes in the sense that they sound very unpolished and a bit raw. A lot of folk punk songs tell good stories too. Ghost Mice have an album called “Europe.” Each song is named after a place they traveled through and is about their experience. It’s really neat.

There are some good ones in the answers above, but I didn’t see Darius Rucker or Bob Seger in the list.
