Can I do anything about this laptop computer mishap?

Asked by marialisa (464points) June 25th, 2011

In December of 2009, I bought an ASUS computer from Best Buy Company in the Midwest. In December of 2010, I brought the computer to Best Buy to get a new battery and they sent it to ASUS. ASUS replaced the battery AND the keyboard that had an ALT key messed up. They also diagnosed the computer and it passed all tests. Recently (last few months) I was having issues with the battery power cord cable so I brought it to Best Buy and they tested it and sold me anothr power cord cable. That worked for 2 days and then my computer went dead and would not charge at all. I then had Best Buy test it and they said it was probably my dc adapter and I may need a new motherboard and that a power surge probably burnt it out. It would cost around $400ish to fix. I brought it to a less expensive place and the guy said showed me that a screw was loose in the computer and rolling around. He said the screw probably arced and burnt out the motherboard. I called for a second opinion and they said the screw probably shorted out the M.B. This screw was left in my laptop from the ASUS repair technician, 99% most likely. My computer is not warrantied any longer.
WHAT can and should I do Fluther Geeks? I say that in a nice respectful way!!!

I would get a written and notarized statement from the repair place I last took it too that found the loose screw and the second opinion people. If I could get no love from Asus, even after going as high up as I could go, I would simply file a small claims against them. Then they would have to prove they didn’t leave the screw and it happened some other way. I would have a clause in there that if they repaired the laptop and did so correctly, you would drop the suit. Maybe they will see fixing it right as the cheaper option than fighting it. If they lost they might be out more money.

Honestly, there probably isn’t much you can do. A lawyer would cost 10 times what you paid for the laptop and you would most likely lose. And the cost of fixing things is probably going to be greater than buying a new laptop that is better now.

And Best Buy sucks. I had similar problems with my moms computer.

I was and am anal about my laptop. It was one and a half years old and I let noone use it and took great care of it. i used it alot but paid $600.00 for it and it should last longer than it did. I will fight somehow and I do not need the expense of a lawyer for this.

@Hypocrisy_Central gave you great advice. That is pretty much your recourse in such a matter.
