What hypocrisy can you point out or know of OTHER THAN RELIGION??

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) August 15th, 2011

When it comes to pointing out a hypocrisy most cannot be imaginative to venture past religion because it is the easiest fruit on the tree to reach. Well, tease that Gray matter of yours and reach further to something like why when a guy plays basketball all the time and does nothing else, but get paid millions he is a professional worthy of fans and groupies. If he plays all the time and does nothing else for fun, he is a lazy bum? Something like that. Make me proud, show me you can reach higher on the tree. Aside from religion, what hypocrisy, real or alludes to, do you see going on?

Falling in love with a liar, and defending him.
Cheating through grad school, and getting the best grades.
Electing politicians that know zilch about what they’re voting on.

Men that get around are studs, but women are “sluts”.

@FutureMemory There ya go! See? Reaching a little higher up wasn’t that much of a strain. :-)

@linguaphile If you were going to use polotics you could have pointed out that they are suupose to be public servants but yet we seem to be serving them at every turn.

linguaphile's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central I could, yes, but then you wouldn’t have had an opportunity to add something, right? :) Generally, I stay away from politics- I’m not an expert, but I know this much: I do find it twisted and hypocritical that people stand up and say they’re qualified, we vote for them, then they make decisions about education, health care, defense, etc etc, but know absolutely nothing about education, health care, defense, etc etc.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@linguaphile I do find it rather hypocritial that just because someone has a title like governor, mayor, controller, etc in fron of their name, people all of s sudden think they are Superman that can fix anything when he/she was the regional manager of a box company before the election.

@Hypocrisy_Central Or… PhD, JD, EdD, MBA, MFA after their name. Or, “I’ve worked here for thirrrrty-fiiiive years, I know what I’m talking about.”

when republicans claim they won’t put one more cent of debt on their children’s backs…. and then owe over 100000 in child support.

Your_Majesty's avatar

I believe generally there would be hypocrisy behind every honesty. Some of them would be:
– Most ‘good’ police are actually dirty cops.
– Parents that don’t accept that their kids are gay.
– People who said they can’t be bought while they need or will do anything for money.
– Hospitals that accept people that can’t afford the their services.
– Mate that said he/she choose you not because of your beauty but because of what’s inside you.

Why there are so many FutureMemory clones in this thread? Darn you doppleganger! LOL.

@sarahhhhh: “Liberals are often the least tolerant of other peolpe’s views.”

People make this statement all the time without trying to determine if it makes any sense. As far as I can tell, it makes no sense at all.

tom_g's avatar

I find the daily life of most individuals completely hypocritical, since it doesn’t seem to align very much with their most cherished values.

Blackberry's avatar

Yes, why are there so many FutureMemory avatars?

Jellie's avatar

@tom_g conservatives as opposed to liberals are accused of being intolerant and dogmatic whereas liberals are known to be the ones that don’t care much about what goes on in terms of people’s personal life choices. I’ve known this to be false. Applying the conventional meaning to liberal and conservative.
Also I realize this applies to religion, sorry @hypo

@sarahhhhh – Could you be more specific? Again, I’ve heard this before, but I am a bit unclear by what you are getting at here.

When anti-abortion folks never did once try to adopt an already existing orphan. ( wait is that religion related? )

People that use the racism card but have no problem being a racist themselves.

That side “A” is any different than side “B” when it comes to:

Politics
Racism
Abortion
Homosexuality
Sexism
Chocolate and Peanut Butter
and that other one you were talking about up top

tom_g's avatar

@Blondesjon – Side A is no different than side B in any of these cases?

Racism
A: All “races” should be given the same rights.
B: African Americans are of a primitive race of sub-humans and should only be given the rights of a dog.

Is that the moral relativism argument again, or am I off base here? In what way(s) is “side A” hypocritical by thinking that its position is “any different than side B”?

Blondesjon's avatar

@tom_g . . . I’m talking about Race “A” and Race “B” debating which side is the worst in terms of being racist. The point I am making is that 99% of debate about the examples above involves Side “A” trying to vilify the other by claiming that Side “B” did example, example, example. All the while Side “A” is guilty of exactly the same example, example, example.

Most folks don’t or won’t even see it as hypocrisy because they are so married to their own flavor and the insane need to be “right”.

Blackberry's avatar

@Blondesjon Oooh….Gotcha. @tom_g I was wondering, too, but knew there was a misunderstanding lol.

Blondesjon's avatar

some of my best friends belong to a race

tom_g's avatar

@Blondesjon – Not sure I understand, but @Blackberry did so I’ll assume I’m just slow. Off to find more caffeine…

Blackberry's avatar

@tom_g He or she (sorry, I forget who is who) is just referring to the back-and-forth name calling from both sides. Whites calling blacks racist, blacks calling whites racist, democrats saying republicans are destroying america, and republicans saying democrats are destroying america etc.

tom_g's avatar

@Blackberry – But we can evaluate those claims and arguments and determine which ones are more accurate. There are answers to be had about the real effects of racism and the policies supported by a political party. If I claim I am taller than you, and you reply, “No! I am taller than you!”, bystanders are under no obligation to declare us to be of equal height because we are making conflicting claims.

The list of topics that @Blondesjon presented have real-world consequences that are not served by relativism. The more I’m reading this, it appears that he may have meant that.

Blondesjon's avatar

@tom_g . . . The real life consequence of any of these arguments is that neither side will concede. This means nothing will ever be done because there will never be an agreement. Without any kind of agreement we will all just stand around pulling our puds and wonder why things are so fucked up.

for the record, my original examples are a great deal more subjective than height difference. solve an abortion argument with a ruler.

tom_g's avatar

@Blondesjon“nothing will ever be done”

Really? Abortion has been legalized, resulting in fewer botched illegal abortions and deaths. We have eliminated slavery and we have civil rights protections in this country. Women can now vote, and we are making steps towards eliminating gender inequality in many areas. Homosexuals can marry in my state and a growing number of other states.

It might look bad, but humans are capable of making progress.

I don’t know what to say about chocolate and peanut butter.

Blondesjon's avatar

Abortion, civil union, and civil rights all fluctuate based on what flavor happens to be in power. For example, abortion is legal right now but it is still a defining issue when it comes to nominees for the Supreme Court. Why? Because they have the power to change laws regarding abortion. Entitlement programs fluctuate in benefits paid based on what flavor is in power. Civil unions have become legal in many states but if you changed the power structure in any of those states the whole thing comes crashing down or gets put on hold.

As far as women being able to vote? I’m a man and I don’t believe that my vote counts for shit. The fact that any of us have a “right” to vote in this day and age is an empty gesture.

Until there is true agreement on any of the issues listed they are vulnerable to the whims of whoever is steering the ship at the time.

tom_g's avatar

@Blondesjon – Well, I guess I just disagree. Regardless of what you think about suffrage, women didn’t get this right (despite the fact men had it) until 1920. So, for the past 90 years, women have had this right. For the past 40 years, abortion has been legal. Slavery was abolished some time ago. The civil rights acts were put in place in the 60s. Homosexuals have been able to marry here in Massachusetts for 7+ years.

I understand that progress is not always a straight line, and that we must always fight to maintain the rights we have. But the fact that humans have made significant progress is something I can’t ignore just because we all don’t agree.

tom_g's avatar

Also, @Blondesjon – I agree that we must always be vigilant that our hard-fought freedoms are not eliminated. I’m not sure if we’re really arguing about anything to be honest. You seem a bit down concerning human progress and if it’s even possible. I think that there are blips for sure, but if you look at human history, we’ve made progress ethically. There is an upward trend.

- Self proclaimed anarchists that claim all cops are pigs, and then during times of unrest they run around looting shops destroying hard working people’s livelihoods and making people afraid to go out in their own neighborhood, essentially proving why we need cops.

- If a woman cheats on a man, it’s because he didn’t treat her right. If a man cheats on a woman, it’s because he’s a pig.

There’s tons more but that’s all I can think of for now..

FutureMemory's avatar

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Blondesjon for the record, my original examples are a great deal more subjective than height difference. solve an abortion argument with a ruler. Even things as heinous as abortion could be done more fair and less hypocritical if society had the balls to do it.

@Leanne1986 People that use the racism card but have no problem being a racist themselves. I have seen that one! Know Hispanic people who don’t like Asians, white people who are OK with Asians and Blacks but hate Hispanics, etc.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@syzygy2600 I actually see the opposite; if a man cheats on a woman, it’s because she didn’t fulfill his needs, if a woman cheats on a man, it’s because she’s a slut.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Aethelflaed I guess the hypocrisy would be in the man that feels he should be able to boink the hatcheck girl at the motel, or the receptionist at the convention but gets angry when he finds his wife boinked the hot cable guy. On the other hand, the woman who is taking laps with the Maytag man, some bloke she met at the super market and getting her fluids inspected in back of the oil change place she took the car to, but get pissed when he comes home with lipstick on his collar and strange perfume on his jacket and shirt.
