Is anyone having unexplained illness from splenda(sucralose)?

Asked by julielynn (10points) August 31st, 2011

I have used Splenda for years, increasing useage in everything! Seems I have also developed strange unexplained medical issues, swelling, (now carry an epipen) mouth ulcers that never heal, painful bumps on tongue. Funny, I even crave real sweets more too!
The joke was seeing aunt julie with her large container of splenda that went with her everywhere! Now I am afraid it has made me sick?

How do you know it was the Splenda?

I have read some pretty bad things about artificial sweeteners. They have been linked to all sorts of things incuding MS,which I have,I have been ingesting those sweeteners for a long time.I am also diabetic.
Try to switch to stevia.

stevia tastes way better than those artificial sweeteners too and its mad easy to grow :)

I don’t know if it was splenda..that is just the only thing I have been using daily and a lot of it’,,I have stopped the excess, using stevia mostly, splenda every now and again….so I am so frustrated with all these things happening to me, and yes I have been to many docs, including the allergist with the multi skin tests!

Miracle fruit berry tablets area good natural alternative that work wonders, although taste a bit weird themselves, it’s worth it.

Stop eating it. Stop for a two weeks, see if you heal up, and then the real test is start up again one day and see if you feel like shit. In medicine that is called a retrial. It does not surprise me at all that you still crave sweets, you are getting much less carb calories if you aren’t eating sugar, and especially if you are limiting other carbs. I never use fake sugar. Never.

You seem to have Aunt Julie and her tub of Splenda in your sights…MO you have a lot of homework/research in your lap.

It’s possible that the Splenda is causing it, it’s also possible that you’re genetically pre-disposed to some condition you have that’s completely unrelated to Splenda, or that there is some other perfectly good explanation. There are so many potential causes that it seems silly to jump on Splenda as the specific culprit without doing the kind of test that @JLeslie suggests.

I know there are probably millions of people that regularly use Splenda that don’t have the medical issues you do. And there are many other millions of people who don’t use Splenda who have similar symptoms.

Have you seen a Doctor? How do you correlate your condition with the sweetener – which is based on sucralose – which is from real sugar?

Not me but I have a friend whose body had issues with trying to digest appends which resulted in several appends kidney stones. Yeah, not pleasant. But otherwise I ‘ve never heard of anything about it.
