1. Nimbostratus
2. Mamma (mammatus)

That’s my guess from peeking at this website.

They are both a mix of altostratus and altocumulus. The first picture is mammatus (so altostratus mammatus, for example). The second looks like the product of wind shear and turbulence.

There are multiple hypothesis’ for the formation of mammatus clouds, which means we don’t exactly know what causes them. Also to correct myself, the first one could be nimbostratus as well.

Photo numero uno is awesome.

@Jude I agree. These were both taken locally this evening, and I thought they were incredible.

I take cloud pictures almost everyday. These are great! They remind me of clouds when it is about to snow. Don’t see those often in the south.

rebbel's avatar

I take pictures of them often too. maybe someone should ask a Post your cloud photo question….

I see clouds like that often during the springs here in Winfield during tornado season. They are SLC’s, according to our weathermen.

They look like Nimbus clouds.

Clearly, these clouds are a sign of the apocalypse.

Seriously, though – great photos.

I have never been able to remember the different types of clouds. They fascinate me, but I can never remember what is what.
I only asked this question to see if I could get @Blackberry to say “wind shear and turbulence.” Cause that’s hot.
@tom_g agreed. They didn’t come out this way, they were a bit south of me.. but I’m jealous of those that saw them in person.

Wow, great pics, thanks for sharing. See this article for pictures of various clouds, scroll down for the pictures along the right hand side, especially the last one.

I can get diggy with those clouds, man! I have some of my own, too! Wanna see ‘em? You’ll dig ‘em!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I gotta find them, now….hang on.

I wasn’t at this game at K-State, but my coworker was. She showed me the pics on her phone (these aren’t from her phone…they’re just from an online search, but that’s what they looked like.) Here is some video I found on them. That would be VERY mooky! But we see SLC’s almost as bad every spring.

Now, you have to tell my my State Clouds are diggy OK?!

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Dutchess_III they are diggy. ;) Beautiful photos. That’s more along the lines of what I would expect to see here during tornado season. The video is incredible!

Dutchess_III's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Yeah…even for Kansas, where we’re well known for SLCs, that’s above and beyond!

Dutchess_III's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Thanks…I might get my pudding cup back yet! : )

I’ve never seen these types of clouds before. Awesome.
