How can someone lose 50 pounds in one week?

Asked by silverangel (939points) December 30th, 2011

So there was this someone who wanted to lose 50 pounds in two days but I thought it was too much so i prolonged the time period a little. So this person is forbidden from getting out of the house and doesn’t have any gymnastic equipment in his house that can help..
So what can he do? It seems urgent to lose that amount of weight in little time, so can you help?

Are you serious?
Losing 50lbs in one week is virtually impossible, and would be extremely dangerous and probably require severe dehydration. And by “dangerous” I mean “probably fatal.”

No, the idea is ludicrous.

Unless he’s willing to amputate a leg?

You have a chainsaw?

silverangel's avatar

Then how many pounds can someone lose in a week??

Tropical_Willie's avatar

2 to 5 pounds for a male that currently weighs 260 pounds. Less for females and lower weights.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

2lbs in a week is considered to be safe. 10lbs would be ambitious, but not impossible if a person has a significant amount of weight to lose… but there is no way to guarantee a loss like that, even in the early phases of weight loss.

Seriously?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@silverangel I’ve dropped 15 pounds in a week with a lot of exercise, but that was more than I really want to do.

By decomposing I guess.

Seriously, not possible. This person can’t be serious.

Impossible, unless you are partially consumed by a large predator such as a mountain lion or grizzly bear. It will take a minimum of 6 months, and more like 9–12 to safely drop 50lbs.

30 minutes of vigorous exercise daily and a strict 1500 calorie diet will result in about a 1½ to 2lb. loss per week. Anything over 2 lbs. a week is not healthy and the faster you lose it the more likely you will be to pack it back on again.

If someone was quite heavy and started perhaps a low carb diet, they might lose 5 to 8 lbs right off the bat (with dieting strictly and that would be water weight), but 50 is impossible for anybody.

I am curious for what reason would someone want to lose 50 lbs so quickly, especially since it’s impossible, nobody in their right mind would expect someone else to drop that much weight. If even for a requirement, like a job or the military, the person’s weight is the person’s weight and everyone knows that 50 lbs would be an impossibility so quickly. Maybe 50 lbs in a year is do-able, but not one week. Even with weight loss surgery it would not come off in one week.

You can’t do it, and live to tell the tale.

@jca certain athletes do what is called “weight cutting,” usually to drop weight before an event. Some of these people are able to drop large amounts of weight in a very short period of time, but the effects are short lived.. and achieving them is dangerous and potentially fatal. However, these are people who are typically in excellent physical condition to begin with, and their “weight loss” is achieved almost entirely by severe dehydration and under medical supervision (in most cases). For your average person? It is impossible. Hell, it is impossible for most people.
As for this question? I have to question the motive, and I really hope that the OP or their friend.. or whoever… recognizes that their life is far more important than whatever happens at the end of this week.

silverangel's avatar

Fine I will warn her but I’m curious @Adirondackwannabe how did you do it?

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@silverangel how did this person go from being “he” and “his” to being “her” since you asked this question?

downtide's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf hey, if someone can lose 50 pounds in a week, surely they can get a sex change in a week too.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Jeez, suddenly I feel slow.

I lost about 15 lbs. in 10 days once when I was recovering in the hospital from a severe kidney infection. I was on an IV for days and barely conscious, it was bad. When I came out of it and then was on a clear liquid diet of water, apple juice, tea, and jello…man…what a body I had!

I remember being fascinated with my reflection in a vending machine in the hospital the day I was released. I was so tiny! lol

@silverangel I was up in Lake Placid and it was hotter than normal, mid to high 90’s. So I started swimming as much as I could.I got up in the morning and did about 1000 meters and then when we got back from our travels in the afternoon I’d do another 800 to 1000 meters. Every day.

You dont need gym equipment to get exercise.

stomach crunches, jumping jacks, etc.

I’m going to stop following this, now, but I feel like I have to say this in order to have some peace of mind…
To whoever is trying to lose weight; please don’t do anything foolish. Your health, your life, is far more important than any reason for a week deadline. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Please don’t take any health risks in an attempt to reach an unrealistic goal. 2–5lbs a week, max, is considered to be safe, and long term weight loss can be achieved with a healthy diet and exercise. If losing weight were simple and fast, we’d all be slender. Take care.

That is insane.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Could we have more specifics? How much does he/she weigh? Why is it “urgent” that he/she loses 50 pounds in a week? What happens in a week? Why can’t he/she get out of the house? What does gymnastic equipment have to do with anything?

Coloma's avatar

@Dutchess_III

You can be thinner for your funeral in one week. lol

Dutchess_III's avatar

Eat one cheerio a day. That’ll get you close! Maybe.

Extreme liposuction?

I stepped on the scale yesterday and it was so not good : ( Think I have had one too many Christmas cookies so if you find a safe and _healthy way to lose 50ish lbs please PM me!Otherwise… I’d say it’s impossible without surgery.

I will be attempting to lose 40ish lbs within 4 mnths with a change in diet and through exercise, though. I think that is a realistic and doable goal : )

jca's avatar

@EnchantingEla: I had weight loss surgery and still, 50 lbs did not happen in one month!

Ela's avatar

@jca I though maybe a combo of lippo and plastic surgery would do the trick ; )
