Contribute/debunk a theory of mine. (Details inside)

Asked by Unbroken (10746points) October 22nd, 2012

I have a theory of what causes certain beings that achieve and keep a cultlike following on the internet is that they resonate deeply with the participants as either traits they desire/admire or think they have.

Some examples would be Tesla: he was insanely smart, had odd phobias, was closeted and wasn’t officially recognized or appreciated for his genuis.

Cats because they are generally unsociable independent quirky and make life on their own terms.

Are these examples hero worship or odd obsession? Are there additional examples that prove your personal theory?

I think people follow people they find interesting yes. Or identify with. I can’t really comment on cultlike, I don’t really follow anyone on the net. They’re basically not that interesting enough for me. However, there are some Jellies here, that if they started a blog or so, I would be first to sign on!
