How do I turn on the left-hand column in my Facebook home page?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43691points) December 28th, 2012

This is the column that had friends, groups, news feed, etc. It just disappeared and I can’t find it anywhere. I went to Facebook “help” but that was useless. I even tried google and that didn’t help.
Surely I am not the only person on the planet with this problem. Or am I?
I’m using Firefox 17 for Yahoo if that makes a difference.

Is there a right-hand column replacing the left one? If so, look in the very bottom right corner of that column for a gear and then next to that is another symbol which includes an arrow. Click on the arrow symbol, and it should restore the left-hand column and hide the right-hand one.

I have a right-hand column that is for chat. I saw the gear and clicked it but that is only for chat options. The arrow to the right only shrinks the chat -right hand column down.
The left side did not appear. This is so frustrating.

grrrr! I know the frustration.

Does this help? I’m having trouble picturing what you see when you look at your home page. Are the headings (Newsfeed, Apps, Friends, Groups, Pages) there? Or are they gone as well?

@glacial I do not have the left column at all. On my home page all I see are my normal posts and the “Chat” window. No menus.

@LuckyGuy This may be a dumb question, but have you tried logging out and then logging in again?

Close the right-hand chat column. Log out, and then log in again.

If you haven’t tried that, it’s worth a shot.

Yeah, it sounds like it might be some sort of glitch. I don’t think there’s a way to “turn it on” again. Probably with logging off and on and… waiting… it will come back eventually.

OK, I will give that a shot. I will log out, clear cache, restart windows, log in. Facebook is such a time suck. How do people stand it? Am I really the only person that has this problem? Really?

OK. I did all the above and it is back.I can see the news feed. However if I click on my picture, the left column disappears. I can only see the left column if I log out and log in or use the “back” button. Surely there is a button or switch hidden someplace.

There is something wrong with your FB settings, I’m guessing. I can’t tell you how to fix it, because I’m certainly not an FB expert. Good luck.

@LuckyGuy But if you click on your picture, you’re no longer on the Home page, you’re on your profile. That left hand column doesn’t exist in Timeline (I assume you’re on Timeline).

LuckyGuy's avatar

@glacial How do you go from Timeline to Home then? Where is the Home button on the Timeline page?

It’s near the right-hand side of the blue bar that runs across the top of the page.

My problem with Facebook (and curiously, it’s only a problem on Chrome, and only on this PC; Firefox works “normally”, and it works fine in Chrome on my work PC) is that the buttons embedded in the blue bar at the top are missing. So I can’t click anything to see “Messages”, “Updates” and “Events” through the buttons. What a pain.

LuckyGuy's avatar

That is similar to my problem. The words ( my name, Home, etc.) are missing from the blue bar at the top.

I’m guessing that there has been some change to the template, and these problems haven’t been brought to the attention of the development team (or the responsible folks are on break, due to the holidays, perhaps). But if you’re having the same problem that I have (and yours is worse than mine), then I’m sure the howls of protest are rising (somewhere) at FB Central.

You could always do what I do and just run a different browser (for now) for FB. Firefox is my alternate browser of choice.
