Can an iTunes playlist be downloaded on an iPhone?

Asked by Jaybee (220points) June 12th, 2008

I want to send someone as a gift an iTunes playlist. Will this person be able to download the list directly to their iPhone if they wish to? (instead of a computer)

I dont see why not, have you tried it yet?
Is iTunes the new way to make someone a “mixed tape”?

Not yet. But I am attempting to do so now. The person receiving the gift I presume first receives the email notifying them that they been sent a iTunes playlist gift. Then I’m guessing it will include a link in the e-mail that takes them to the iTunes site for download. (this is what I’m hoping) And miraculously the download will begin.

The iPhone version of the iTunes store only supports commercially packaged albums and singles from commercial artists. Although you can create an iMix in the full version of iTunes (on a computer), you can’t access iMixes from the iPhone.

==========================================

Option A. Gifting a Playlist. (Can only be done from a computer, not accessible from iPhone).

You can “gift” a custom Playlist to someone, however, you first need to have their email address and an iTunes account set up. Then, you can build a custom playlist and “gift it” to your friend.

[Note: They’ll also need an iTunes account, and once you send them the “gifted” playlist (email notification), they’ll need to download the Playlist from their own computer, as this can’t be done from an iPhone.]

But it can be done. I can’t send you a link to the instructions on how to gift a Playlist (there is no direct link), but the easiest way to do this is:

1. Open iTunes, then in the search bubble in the top right corner, type the word “gift”;

2. Then in the search results, in the upper-right corner, click on “How to gift.” Next, scroll down the page to the section “Give Specific Music, TV Shows, and Movies” and then at the very bottom of that page, click on the link “Gifting Custom Playlists.”

3. You’ll be taken to the instruction page to gift custom playlists. This method requires you to first purchase the music, then gift it (you don’t have to purchase the music twice, this just allows you to compile a playlist from content in the iTunes Store).

Follow the instructions on “How to Gift Specific Music, TV shows, Movies and More on iTunes” and you’ll be on your way.

Option B: Buy the music, then burn your own CD to give as a gift.

You could just purchase the music, compile the playlist and burn a CD for them too; this “old school” method seems to be the simplest.

=============================================================

Option C. Creating an online playlist (in the iTunes Store), that anyone can access and buy for themselves.

(Note: The information below is different from gifting a playlist. iMixes are online playlists that anyone can purchase on their own)

Another option of creating and publishing online playlists is to use iTunes’ iMix feature (an iMix is just a means to publish a playlist in iTunes, not for gifting playlists). This feature just allows you to compile a playlist of songs without having to purchase them, and can only be done (set up and download) using a computer

To learn about creating an iMix, click the following link:

(^^That method above just publishes a playlist in the iTunes store); you can’t gift an iMix to someone.

Hope this helps.
