My lips are turning black and I don't know why?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) April 19th, 2013

I don’t smoke or drink. It used to happen when I put something I was allergic to on my lips but I haven’t put anything on my lips in the past 3 weeks or so. They aren’t like exceptionally dry or anything, they are just getting really patchy and dark…..It looks bad, what could be wrong?

I saw something on this very recently, but I can’t recall where. It had to do with some contaminant in certain lipsticks. (It’s not a joke that I really saw this, but I can’t be certain that the posting that I saw was honest / accurate / serious.)

If I can find it again I’ll post a link.

EDIT: Okay, I haven’t found the exact post that I glanced at (not being a lipstick wearer, and without a current main squeeze, I don’t read all of the ‘girl-directed’ articles that I run across – unless they’re about “her”), but I recall the topic now: Lead in Lipstick.

If you google that term you’ll find a lot of conflicting information regarding how lead can cause black lips in cheap, low-quality (non-compliant with FDA regulations) lipstick, and other sites claiming to “bust that hoax, because such cosmetics would never be allowed in the USA”.

Wherever the truth lies, it might be a good idea to check out the cosmetics that you are using, and maybe not use them for awhile, and see if that helps. It’s not as if you need lipstick to make it through the day, do you?

@CWOTUS I think that is a hoax. I saw that floating around facebook a few days ago also. I have never heard of such a thing before. I worked in cosmetics, not the science, but in the sale of, and have never heard of people having their lips turn black from lipstick.

You said your lips got like that when you put something to them that you were allergic to. Have you thought of the idea that maybe you’ve become mildly allergic to something you’re eating and your lips are reacting to it? I get that way with raw tomatoes. They don’t affect me at all except my lips get blistered and darken.

@Seek_Kolinahr Glad I am not the only one who failed This course.

Back on topic, LiveStrong article on darkening lips. Anything from toxins in the body to lack of proper lip care (whatever that is). Good, short read that could prompt your memory over the past three weeks.

Hmm, I’ll watch my diet for a while and see if anything changes….I’ve been having allergic reactions to a lot of stuff lately so I wouldn’t be surprised

@JLeslie mmmm i don’t know about that, there are certain brands on lip gloss that my lips get dark from. Might not be lead though as my mom has no problem with that
