What do you think of this obituary?

How horrible would a person have to be to be to get a reaction like this?

Wow. They paid a lot to say all that when basic facts could have been given. Terrible.

I can’t imagine the kind of person/mother she must have been. Horrible.

Well, at least they didn’t go through life unnoticed. I kind of hope I’ll be remembered a little bit better than that.

I feel like there’s no need to publish nasty and negative things in someone’s obit. Why not just give the facts about her life (children she had, spouse(s), employment, where she lived, and leave it at that? There must be something nice they could have stated, such as “she was a longtime resident of such and such a town” or something like that. How do they publish such a thing when it’s not necessary?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I don’t know, but if I go through life being a miserable bastard shouldn’t that follow me to the grave? Heck put it on my headstone.

Maybe the obit was a marker buoy for this.

@Adirondack No, not when someone can’t defend themself. Pretty cheap way to make yourself feel better.

There was some follow up to that, it seems she was a pretty despicable person. @jca, it seems there was nothing nice about her at all.

@jca Maybe the reason to say all that is people outside the family don’t know the real person. Maybe the comments they made (Sorry for your loss, she was a wonderful co-worker, etc.) were insulting and they wanted to set the record straight. It is cold and I don’t think I would be able to do it but maybe it brought comfort to her family. Who knows why people do what they do.

@Adirondackwannabe I wouldn’t spend that kind of money for the engraving. :)

I hope wherever Delores is she’s happy not having to put up with such a rotten family.

There are two sides to every story and the dead lady is not able to tell hers.

Many people who die were bad natured and abusive and I think that it is refreshing that some survivors opt to tell it like it was instead of sugar coating the truth. daylight is the best disinfectant.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

I think that it was in poor taste. I wouldn’t have said anything.

Absolutely NO redeeming features? I suppose it’s possible. Her children wanting to strike back after all this time? What an unfortunate situation. It may be best not to say anything, but we weren’t there. She certainly bred contempt. I hope her appalling life ends with her and that her children are able to live free of her bile.

jca's avatar

Maybe she is now free of their bile, and not the other way around.

Sadly, death brings out something ugly in some people…just as someone else said, the woman isn’t around to explain herself. There could be many things that would cause this. But, like the saying goes, “some things are better left unsaid.”
