Can even a minor trauma leave you out of sorts?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46828points) November 27th, 2013

I had very minor outpatient surgery yesterday. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes. Local anesthetic and and only 3 stitches. He didn’t prescribe any pain meds, and I don’t need any. Yet all day today I’ve just felt blah, like I wanted to sleep, more than anything.

Yes. Regardless of how minor the procedure was, your body still needs energy to heal your wound and whatever else was involved with the surgery. Listen to your body and try to rest up. I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Any trauma to the body can throw you off, but what you had done doesn’t sound like it would affect you much. Are you sure it isn’t bad weather (are you having bad weather) or some sort of holiday associated depression?

Could be some of that too @JLeslie.

If you’re a stoic, I believe that sometimes minor trauma can be worse than major trauma.

A stoic will forge ahead during a major trauma, viewing it as a challenge. A minor trauma might catch you off guard and allow your body to express some of that repressed emotion. Just like when people can’t cry at the death of a loved one, the fall completely apart at the site of a fallen bird.

I’m sure it can, as it reminds us of our mortality but you soon bounce back.

Bouncing here! Not really. Jiggling a little, though.

@Dutchess_III I’ll also mention this: The body has a memory, and even if you don’t remember an incident, your body does. If you are hurt in an area of your body where you were previously traumatized, it can affect you emotionally. PM me for details if you want to know more.

Part of our brain remembers so, yeah. I agree.

Any anaesthetic can cause tiredness. Even a local anaesthetic will eventually work its way into the bloodstream and be carried around your whole body. Not in sufficient quantities to anaesthetise you of course, but it doesn’t surprise me that tiredness is a side-effect.
