How and why does our mood affect what music we want to hear?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) May 15th, 2014

Today I just want the rawest most extremely rough music I can find in my collection. I have no idea why, but anything mellow is turning me off right now. And some days I just want the mellow stuff. What’s up with that?

Music is the food of the soul.
Your mood determines the type of genre you want to listen to. I think this is because people tend to believe that if they’re gloomy and blue then they coerce on listening to music which will make them feel more miserable. I believe it’s human nature I tend to do it to. It’s just the way it is.

Feeling down again, @Adirondackwannabe? :(

I agree with @DipanshiK. People tend to use music as a way to express their feeling. When you are in a certain mood you want to listen to the music that fit your mood. Listening to music that fits your mood gives you a feeling of “sympathy”, as if you were expressing your mood to someone else.

That’s just my guess…

@Mimishu1995 Not down, thanks for asking. :) I just am in the mood for mean hard rock today. I just was trying to figure out why.

@Dutchess_III Love Alice. I want to go golfing with him sometime.

Sometimes I choose music to get me in the mood I want to be in. Working in a sales job I would listen to Prodigy or rave music as I got ready so I would be pumped and ready to sell that early in the morning.

@GloPro I’m the opposite. My mood determines the music. I can’t really change my mood with the music.

So you never put on slow jams or Body and Soul when you want to get down with your lady to get her (or you) in the mood after dinner?

Music can help trigger some emotional responses or sentiments that have somehow not been expressed out.
If I am in a very happy mood, I love to listen to sweet, melodious or even fast beats. When I am low, I resort to silent soft tunes, not the harsh, rough ones. Some sacred chanting can also suit well.

Now I’ve mellowed down a bit to Seger, Bob, not Pete.

I knew the Carpenters would mellow you! How about some Captain and Tenille? :D

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Dutchess_III Oh sure. Or I could just jump off the roof a few times and stick a fork in my ears.

It should tell you something that I tend to listen to a lot of fast, percussive music; metal, house, trance…
