End of an era? Playboy says "no nudes is good nudes"?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33161points) October 13th, 2015

Too much competition from the internet…. but think of all the teenage boys in the last half of the last century that saw their first naked women in Playboy.

RIP… fully nude women in Playboy…

Yes, end of an era. My father travelled a lot on business in the ‘60s, I loved when he picked up a Playboy at the airport to read on the plane. But I can’t remember the last time I saw someone read a Playboy in public.

And, it is passing more with a whimper than a bang. Who knew they had stopped putting up nudes on their website a year ago?

I think it’s great. Playboy returns to it’s origins of a masculine forum with great fiction, insightful interviews and tasteful eroticism.

I hope they find renewed success.

They should become a high quality hard core pornography studio.

From Hugh Hefner’s first Letter from the Editor:

“We enjoy mixing up cocktails and an hors d’oeuvre or two, putting a little mood music on the phonograph, and inviting in a female acquaintance for a quiet discussion on Picasso, Nietzsche, jazz, sex…”

If Playboy could go back to encouraging its target audience to do those things, said target audience would have no shortage of nude women at their feet.

Hey Playboy are you reading this?
Now we’ll see how many actually “buy it for the articles”.

Maybe the focus will change to include articles like:
PSA Screenings: Boon or Boner for predicting Prostate Cancer?
Selecting the best ETF for your 401k.
Are High Number Surgeons really better?
ED drug Comparison. 1000 nights. Our study of 200 men with 5 common drugs help you decide.
Flomax or Hytrin: are the side effects worth it?
etc.

I’d read some of those articles.
Heck! I’d even volunteer as a study participant!

If all you want is pictures of naked women, get Penthouse.

If all you want is pictures of naked women, open a private broswer page. lol

Actually a pretty smart move on their part. They just increased the circulation several times over.

@Seek: Just reading that description makes me want to take off my clothes.

Right? A dude that can cook, mix a proper Martini, AND knows how to read?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Seek 90% of dudes for the record.

_Seek_'s avatar

Sorry, 90% of bartenders don’t know how to make a proper Martini.

Two out of three is not so bad

ragingloli's avatar

Making overcooked scrambled eggs does not qualify as “cooking”

Maybe try something other than ‘hungover dudes trying to make breakfast’ for your chief, @ragingloli.

Playboy had great potential, and that was shown when its circulation soared to over 7,000,000 in the late 1960s, but stiff competition from Penthouse, Hustler, etc. cut into its business, and some bad choices put more nails in its coffin, so the circulation dropped immensely. This is another bad choice, as was having the first transgender Playmate recently. It preaches extremist left wing propaganda and offends people who hate that stance. I have not heard any circulation figures for a while, but I have little doubt they are low. Playboy seems to be obsessed with committing suicide with the many bad choices it has made. Removing nudes is major one!
