How do I educate my wife on Shaving Brushes for Christmas?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) November 16th, 2015

The Wife unit wants to buy me a shaving brush for Christmas. I’ve just recently changed from using shave gel to soap and brush (A very good move I might add) I am using a boar bristle brush and have been learning about Badger brushes which are supposed to be superior. But I am still learning about making a satisfactory lather. Maybe I should ask her to get me something else and I will get the brush myself when I’m ready for it? I don’t want to appear to her like I’m obsessive because I’m really interested, but don’t know enough to give her any guidance of what I want. How do I walk that razor edge?

You definitely want one made of badger.

When you figure out how to educate a mate, let us all know, please.

Is there a branch of The Art of Shaving near you? That would be a good place to get educated and look at a variety of brushes. They have a lot of info on their website.

I have used a brush and soap since I was a teenager, love it especially when I can get really hot water. I use boar bristles, because I can’t afford a god badger bristle brush. But it is on eo those things where paying up as much as you can is worth it.

If you are still trying to find the right combo of the brush and soap shave tell the wife unit this. If you do desire an upgrade on your brush then show her a website or store where you know for certain she will be able to get you that brush you want.

If you do want to hold off for a bit to get used to the routine you now have, be prepared to drop hints of some other thing that would be special for her to gift you.

Much to my great surprise there is one very near where my son works! I had a shave at one in Palm Springs on vacation a couple of months ago and it was a real treat! I will take my brother there for his birthday or whenever he comes down from Chicago next. (I am near Columbus, Ohio) She has to drive as I no longer do, so we will have time to get more educated. In the meantime, I have asked for a quad-copter with a little camera. I am forever a child!

I am still mapping out the directions my whiskers grow. A lot more involved when there is only one blade I’ve found. I see a shaving discussion for my education coming up! Thanks Guys!

@majorrich Thanks to your question I have spent the last hour reading up on this. Found this site very frank on the subject and a bit humorous too!

Make an Amazon wish list with exactly what you want on it. Email it to her.

You’re welcome.

I agree with @Seek. (You can also just send her a direct link, without Amazon as a go-between.)

If you don’t want a surprise, make sure she knows what to get you. If you do want a surprise, it may not be a happy one.

If you don’t know what you wasn’t, and don’t want to get something before you are ready to choose, tell her. She’s your wife. Is she really going to be sensitive and disappointed about it?

You don’t. You make a wish list that includes the brush you want.

I explained to her I am not ready to get a premium brush until I learn more about how to use what I got. (I know she already got me an actual mug so she can get the little bowl I absconded with.) shhhh. ;)

Good.

Maybe give her a list of four other things you want so she doesn’t have to twist herself into a knot figuring out what to get you.

I carry a good quality but not overly fancy badger brush that comes from Germany. It’s a good starter brush. Sells like hotcakes with my oatmeal shave soap. Sounds like you’re wanting to move on from starter ones so make a list of one’s you want to try.
