Is it possible to lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks?

Asked by 01101101 (252points) January 24th, 2016

Hi! Since October last year my metabolism suddenly changed and I started gaining weight fast. I’m turning 21, so I guess it was because of my hormones.

I weigh 100 pounds before. I gained 20 pounds in 3 months and none of my pants can fit me anymore. Another problem that I have is my scoliosis, my chiropractor told me not to gain weight too much or it will affect my back. I want to drop to 110 because it’s my ideal weight for my age. Is it possible to drop 10 pounds in two weeks or a month? And what exercises are perfect for weight loss (before I tone my body)?

Also, is there any healthy diet for that? I want to lose weight fast but I don’t want to drown myself with the protein shakes my mom makes. Thank you very much!

It’s possible to lose 10 lbs in one week but it’s definitely not healthy.

Not really. You would just lose water.

As fast as you gained the weight, it’s possible that a lot of the gain is water.

Don’t eat until you’re hungry ( I know that sounds simplistic, but it’s _not).
Eat healthy and fresh.

If you’re hungry at breakfast, eat whole gains sweetened with fresh fruit or yogurt and ‘milk ‘product of your choice.

Lunch on fresh and cooked veggies with whole wheat crackers and yogurt dip. Hummus, A bit of cheese. Plenty if flavored water or tea. Fruit or granola sweet.

Eat an early, low fat dinner with lots of veggies and fruit. 4–6 oz protein, be it meat fish or substitute.

Snacking on popcorn, veggies with hummus or yogurt dip, or similar is okay.

Basically fill yourself with fiber and eat less than you’ve become accustomed too.
As fast as the weight came on, and as young as you are, 10 pounds in a month shouldn’t be a huge problem.

Increasing your activity/exercise by as little as getting off/on the bus a block further from your destination can help a lot.

If you weighed 500 or 600 pounds, you would lose 10 lbs easily within two weeks and it would be water weight. Since you’re a more “normal” weight, 10 lbs is probably not coming off within that time frame. Maybe you’ll lose 2 or 3 the first week and 1 or 2 the second week.

Also, you said your hormones caused you to gain that weight so fast. That’s not a typical problem. I would go to the doctor if I were you and have him check your thyroid. If you have a slow thyroid (high TSH), that could cause you to gain weight. You gained a lot of weight in a short amount of time, which is not normal.

Edit. I was thinking more along the lines of the OP’s “Is it possible to drop 10 pounds in two weeks or a month?” and considering the weight was put on in 8–10 weeks

Hormones? You turned 21 not 52. Nothing very significant happens to hormones in your early 20’s.

Either you’re eating more calories, exercising less (although it would have to be significantly less exercise) or you might have a thyroid problem. Eating more is common in you’re late teens early 20’s. Freshman 15 from more pizza, restaurant food, packaged food, or alcohol can happen at any time. Doesn’t hurt to get a blood test though for your thyroid.

Can you lose ten pounds in 2 weeks? Sure, but I don’t recommend it. If your eating a lot of junk food and out in restaurants, eat healthier for a week and see if you lose a couple of pounds.

I’m 54 and I don’t know about weight, but I’ve dropped at least one waist size since Xmas.

I’m 5’9” and I’ve worn size 32 waist for at least 30 years.
33 was much more comfortable before Xmas, and now I’m wearing 32’s again.
Now the challenge is to stabilize there.

Why not give yourself the same time as you put on the weight to take it off again? Crash diets are not great because you haven’t changed the habits that led you to gain weight so once you stop dieting, you go back to your old ways and the weight goes on again.

There is no magic diet. It is what you know it is – eat healthily, not too much, and move as much as you can. Eat when you are hungry but pause for a while before you start eating so that you can be sure that you are physically hungry – not emotionally hungry (food will never fill that hole!). Eat plenty of vegetables – start each meal with a salad or vegetable appetiser. Eat at least 5 portions of veg and fruit but be aiming for 9 or 10. Pause a while before moving on to the next course so that your stomach has time to send its ‘I’m full’ signals to your brain. Eat two light meals and one fuller meal. Cut the sugar. Read up on the glycemic index of foods and stick to those with leave you fuller for longer.

You mentioned a health problem – try and find exercise that works with your scoliosis. Swimming? Walking (outside or on a treadmill).

Hope this helps

Safely? No. Heroin or Meth may do the trick, but they cause problems far worse than being 10 pounds overweight.

Realistically, healthy weight loss for someone who is merely overweight instead of morbidly obese is closer to 2–3 pounds a week, at least if you plan on losing it in a way that will keep it off. Now, if you shoot for 10 pound in a month, that’s doable, but a bit hard. I’d plan on 6 weeks.

It is if you stop eating sugar sweets and breads. Eat every 2–3 hours but eat something small just enough to keep you going. Eat brown rice instead of bread and dont eat any grains after 6 pm. Eat your protein food after that.
