How would you go about on how to get the last few dollars left on a prepaid Visa card?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23123points) February 8th, 2016

Say what you want but I will not use my real Visa for anything on line.
I have found prepaid Visa cards work fantastic for on line purchases, the problem I find is that there is always a few dollars left on the card, not enough to make another on line purchase but still a few dollars never the less.
How would you go about getting these last few dollars?

Use them offline toward a cash purchase.

Like at any retailer just say use this up then pay the rest in whatever way type thing?
Ya know I have thought of that a bit of a hassle but at least ya get those last few dollars.
I do wonder how many prepaid card are out there with just a few bucks on them,Visa must be laughing all the way to the bank.

You can donate to charity. Or make a small purchase on E-Bay with free shipping. Or buy a coffee and leave the rest as a tip.

I just did this recently with a $10,00 balance left on a $100.00 gift card. I applied it to filling my tank at the gas station. You could also just go grab some fast food or run throguh a car wash or something.

Jeruba’s right. I dump em all the time at various retailers. Most of them don’t mind a bit when you give them the card then pay the difference in cash or even another card. Restaurants too.

Buy groceries with it.

Some of those prepaid visas deduct money from the card every month, hopefully yours doesn’t. Either way, I wouldn’t hold any sort of GC/Visa card for long if I can avoid it. Spend it fast.

You might be able to download onto PayPal your left over bits. I’m not sure.

Sounds like a good idea for a business. Reclamation of old credit gift card bits. Is anyone doing that already or are we the first to think about it? I think it’s been done for unused gift cards but not for the leftover bits.

I don’t know whether or not you purchase from Amazon but I have used up leftover small amounts of prepaid cards this way.

Just list the card as first choice for payment with the rest going on to a second card etc.

The other thing I have done is to set up a debit card act. from my bank which is not tied to my primary act. This way I can transfer TO IT (but not the reverse) as needed for online transactions.

This avoids the necessity of getting a separate visa gc. when making online purchases. The debit card fulfills that purpose. If the acct. is ever hacked, only the small amount left on the card is at risk. Since it’s not connected to my primary account, that’s not at risk in any way.

I like keeping one or two of these kind of cards in my wallet with a small balance so that I’ll always know I have a few bucks in an “emergency.” I know it sounds silly but it gives me a tiny bit of peace of mind.

@Pachy We never have had our date using quarters only. haha

I would take the card to Target where they make it very easy to spread your payment among different methods.

”$1.87 on this card and the remainder in cash.”

I don’t have anything to add. Everything I was going to say has been covered.
I’m just here for the open bar.

Do you have to keep buying new cards?
Can’t you add credit to the old card, so you only have one to keep track of, and never have that pesky odd change to spend?

Buttonstc's avatar

That’s why I got the debit card from my bank. Whenever I need to, I just call them up and transfer cash into it. And my primary account is not at risk.

I bank them all together for a movie and popcorn.
The beverage is up my sleeve upon entry, however.
(One must be sooo careful to open up a can of pop just at a noisy point of the film!)
