Would you want a paid menstrual leave?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) July 10th, 2017

Here’s the Blog that got me thinking. This is already being done in Asian countries like Japan, South Korea etc. Is it possible in the West?

I personally wouldn’t. I was lucky that my menstrual cycle was always pretty regular and I wasn’t in great pain. However, some women are in a lot of pain and so being able to take a day or two off if they need it would be a good thing. I don’t think the majority of women would abuse the option. Some would, but if you’ve got employees who care about their work and you are looking out for them by allowing such leave, I think most people would not.

Personally, no, but I guess it would have to depend how severe your period is.

Only for those who can’t actually stand it.

But of course everyone would abuse the rule.

I would take an unpaid menstrual leave if I could. One to two days a month I am pretty useless. Without going into too much detail it is very horrible for me for 36 hours.

@Sneki2 :: Totes.. Women totally love to run up to the boss and say they are on the menstrual cycle.

This is shit that only happens on TV shows.

Hey, if you’re gonna have a day off to lie around, why not?

I can totally imagine women doing this.

I really don’t think most women would abuse this privilege any more than people abuse access to sick leave now. If you’ve employed the right people, they won’t abuse such a privilege. My husband has his own business and here, we have much better sick leave that I suspect you do in the US, his workers rarely ever take a day off sick. Just because they know he’s a good boss. He looks after them. They have respect for the company they work for and they wouldn’t want to abuse his good nature. In my experience that covers many years of work in many different workplaces, it is a very small minority that abuse their access to sick leave.

No, it would lead to discrimination against women in the hiring process.

No.

I do want tax free tampons, and for tamping to be coveted under HSA. They are technically a medical device.

No. I don’t think most women are incapacitated by their periods enough to need sick time although some are. I think sick leave or PTO should be generous enough for all that those few who need it can take the time off without being priviliged.

ragingloli's avatar

Just roll it into the paid sickleave regulations.

I agree with @janbb – there are already sick time and similar provisions for many workers. Giving 24 days of additional ‘paid menstrual leave’ each year seems rather over the top.

It would also open up discrimination lawsuits, at least in the US. The argument would be “why should women get 24 days off at the same pay as a male? Shouldn’t men be compensated for the additional work they are doing?

ragingloli's avatar

“Shouldn’t men be compensated for the additional work they are doing?
Only if it is calculated against the time and bandwidth they waste browsing pornhub at work.
But that would mean they would end up paying extra instead of being reimbursed.

No. It’s already covered under sick leave.

josie's avatar

Sure.
I just don’t think anybody will buy it.

No. Are we becoming a nation of whiners?

ragingloli's avatar

@Dutchess_III
You were founded by people who whined about having to pay taxes.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We didn’t want to pay taxes without representation.

Bunch of whiners and special snowflakes.
