When is it OK to return take out food that you got the evening before?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46830points) September 10th, 2017

Can you do it for any reason?

I got a craving for chicken wings. I’ve never had any from Wing Street but it sounded convenient and quick. Rick agreed. I ordered 6 Hawaiian Teriyaki wings for me, and 6 buffalo wings for him. I had to take the girl’s word for it about what was on them, but they just sounded good.

So Rick picked them up and brought them home. My first bite I almost gagged. It was just nasty. I did, actually, eat two of them because I was SO hungry, but I couldn’t eat any more than that. If they were good I could have eaten all 6.
After Rick ate his buffalo wings I asked how they were. He said they were nasty. He said, “It was like they just poured vinegar and sugar on them and called it good.”
I looked at him a little shocked because that is exactly what mine tasted like. So, not only were they nasty, he didn’t get buffalo wings, which I think are supposed to have some sort of barbecue sauce on them. It sounds like he also got the Hawaiian Teriyaki.
Problem is, he ate all of his so I don’t see how we can ask for a refund for those 6, can we? What about a refund on mine because I couldn’t eat them?

And who ever decided those things were worth selling?

I think you’re stuck. Is your place Wing Street or Wing Stop?

Wing Street. The Pizza Hut takeoff.

I think the best bet is to call them as soon as possible and speak to the manager. He is not going to want the food back. Maybe he’ll offer a comp or a refund. At the very least, he’ll know you’re unhappy.

You can also review it on Facebook or Trip Advisor. I saw you wrote something on Facebook but it was on your own page, not the restaurant page.

Of course he’s not going to want the food back, but it’s only right to present it so he can see I didn’t eat it.

Yes, I gave my opinion of Hawaiian Teriyaki chicken. However, apparently enough people do like it that they keep selling them.

@dutchess: then call the manager, discuss and ask him if he wants the food back.

It’s tough to make a case for returning food, after you’ve consumed 80% of it. It sounds like the “cooks” screwed up the so called sauce. But next time, open the order in front of the woman, and try a wing on the spot. If the food is nasty, react accordingly (the louder the better).

I just took it in. He gave us a $16 in store credit. I wasnt demanding at all. I would have understood if he hadn’t. But….i’m Chris’ mom so….(everybody know Chris.)

I’d call or go in and tell them you found the quality of their food unpalatable and ask if they are willing to comp you with another takeout order or, just don’t ever order the wings from them again. ( Oh, see that you got store credit, well good! )
I am one that does not like hot wings at all, don’t understand all the hype for all the work you have to do to glean a couple shreds of meat. LOL
Plus I think the flavoring is nasty.

Wings are my favorite chicken. I prefer white meat and there is no way I can eat a whole breast. 4 or 5 wings are perfect for me.

Why did you go to a “make believe” pizza place for chicken that they call wings?

Had to ask !

elbanditoroso's avatar

You should have called last night, right after you tasted it. Or right after Rick made his comment.

Today – even this morning – was too late.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It worked out @elbanditoroso. I mean I told him if I simply hadn’t cared for my food I would have said, “Well, boo hoo you, Val,” and never ordered them again. But to screw Rick’s order on top of it?”
So I was nice and he was nice and I was Chris’ Mom.

So, we went back for dinner on our $16.00 credit. I got 6 “naked” wings and Rick got the Black Forest ham sandwich, which is super good. I ended up trading him two wings for 2 bites of his sandwich (I couldn’t all 6 anyway) and we shared the fries that came with his sandwich. It was the perfect amount of food. Wings were OK, but I think Rick could do better on his own.

LOL! I told my son about my exchange with the manager. When he pulled up my number he said, “Are you Chris’ Mom?” and when I said yes I jokingly said “I got a $500 credit a a share of stocks! Thanks Chris!”
For about 10 years, after Chris hit his teenager years, that was my name. “Hi Chris’ Mom!” “Hi Chris’ friend!” Even adults said it. I felt like a celebrity.
He asked what the manager looked like. I said, “Well, I think he’s native American.”
Chris laughed and said “Good call! His name is Charley Steeprock!”

Next time call them after you decide to return them. That way, you can do it the following day without them questioning you.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They didn’t question me.

stanleybmanly's avatar

It’s refreshing to hear that you came out ahead. Nice goin Chris’ mom!

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! Well, it’s a small town. Everybody knows everybody. I think it makes everyone just easier to deal with.

marinelife's avatar

Still not OK in my book.

NomoreY_A's avatar

Next time just go visit the Colonel. Finger lickin’ good.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No KFC’s within 50 miles.
We went back and got “naked” chicken wings with our credit.

No matter how badly they messed up the order it’s not OK to return it @marinelife? I’m not referring to just my situation, but to all situations because you said “Never,” as in it’s never OK.

marinelife's avatar

The next day? No.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@marinelife I told you. It’s resolved. No problems.

NomoreY_A's avatar

Hells bells, just mail me the stuff, I’ll deal with it myself. Maggots are good protein. If the Dual Survivor guys can eat them, who am I to take exception?

Dutchess_III's avatar

No, they took it back and I assume threw it in the trash. Gave us a credit which we spent there that evening.
