I’ll Write A Song For You – Earth, Wind & Fire

“There’s in your silent night
joy of a song’s delight
Cause I’ll write a song for you
You’ll write a song for me
We’ll write a song of love, of love”

By Starlight The Smashing Pumpkins. This is a live version from France.

Studio version is prettier.

I’ve always liked Lucy Kaplansky’s Ten Year Night and You’re Still Standing There – that’s not her song; Steve Earle wrote it. But I haven’t heard a better performance.

For a romantic song for star-crossed lovers there’s also The Killers’ Miss Atomic Bomb

She Moved through the Fair is one of my favourites and I like John McCormack’s version of it.

“Color My World.” Mainly because it was always played at our Jr. High sock hops and I was invariably in love with some boy there, dreaming, pleading for the day he’d ask me to dance to that song. Adolescent memories and longings color Color My World.

And I suspect it was the only song you could slow dance to in those days. Most dance music then required people to bounce off the walls like a tennis ball.

This was before disco, dude. Gosh, we had “Color My World,” “Don’t you remember you told me you loved me,” “Muskrat Love.” For faster music we had stuff like, “These Boots Are Made For Walking.” Good stuff, Maynard.

Agreed but Disco sucks.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

These boots are made for walking is a romantic song???

NomoreY_A's avatar

A fast dance song and non disco.

This is what I meant by “more than one kind of romance”. This is a poem from the Romantic period, set to music. It’s not most people’s idea of romance, but there it is.

Throbbing Gristle – What a Day

This is a better version of my previous response. Much better, in fact.

anniereborn's avatar

I think of this as more of a love song than a “romantic” song. It’s one of my all time favs of any genre/era.
