Has Trump gone on a pardoning spree as a warmup to pardoning those being investigated by Mueller?

Asked by LostInParadise (31917points) June 9th, 2018

Seems like the kind of thing he would do. If pardoning becomes normalized then pardoning Flynn or Manafort would not be a big deal. One question of interest would be if they could still plead the fifth after being pardoned.

I don’t think he could pardon them in advance of them being found guilty so that could be damaging enough to him. I don’t put anything past him though.

chyna's avatar

@janbb raises an interesting point. How long after being found guilty can a person be pardoned? The same day, 30 days, 1 year, etc? My thought is that the way this is dragging out, Trump may not even be in office then.

flutherother's avatar

Trump said recently he has the “absolute right” to pardon himself in the Russia inquiry, while insisting he has done nothing wrong. There is an interesting article on this on the BBC News website.

He can pardon them just like Ford pardoned Nixon before Nixon was charged with anything. But, then they can be compelled to testify under oath.

It doesn’t surprise me that Trump would allow his childish impulses to supersede such boring matters as the integrity of his office or the perception he exudes regarding his competence. True to form, he prefers to concentrate on the “magic wand” powers afforded him in keeping with his fairy tale imaginings commensurate with his own omnipotence. Trump will not allow such subtleties as the difference between President and king to “cloud” what passes for his “thinking” Boss is boss and whether he wears one or not, he knows that we all know, he deserves the crown.

A Washington Post writer explains five myths about presidential pardons. According to this law professor, preemptive pardons are perfectly possible.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I honestly don’t understand why the POTUS has the power to pardon anyone. It’s a big mistake by our founding fathers. They were so wary of tyranny, and yet left opportunities for the wrong person to abuse. Incomprehensible…

Think again. Bush Sr. pardoned Caspar Wienberger before there was a trial.. Jerry Ford pardoned Nixon.

NY Times – December 25, 1992 – Following is a statement by the independent counsel, Lawrence E. Walsh, regarding pardons granted today by President Bush.

“President Bush’s pardon of Caspar Weinberger and other Iran-contra defendants undermines the principle that no man is above the law. It demonstrates that powerful people with powerful allies can commit serious crimes in high office—deliberately abusing the public trust without consequence.”

Trump’s pardon spree is a signal to Manafort, Cohen, and his other criminal associates.

“Don’t rat on me. Don’t cooperate with Mueller. Take the conviction and I will pardon you before you spend a single day in prison.”

Is it true that Trump pardoned Martha Stewart? Does that mean she can go over the border again?

zenvelo's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 He has not pardoned Martha Stewart yet, although there is talk about it. She is not prevented from traveling outside the US. Whether she is allowed into Canada is Canada’s decision.

Yellowdog's avatar

The problem is, no one is considering the dangers of Martha Stewart entering Canada, or how much danger we are in with Alice Marie Johnson on the prowl again, praising God and all that, still guilty as hell but free and clear.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Trumpo is already preparing the pardoning speeches for himself and all the Mafioso of Russian decent.

“I didn’t do it but I’m pardoning myself and all the colluders.”

Yellowdog's avatar

Where is the evidence?

Evidence has been uncovered that Hillary Clinton paid Fusion GPS to collude with Russians to produce a false Dossier and present it as real actual intelligence and obtain FISA warrants. There is the source of your Russia propaganda.

Your narrative has gone on for seventeen months now, No evidence. Its wearing a bit thin.

MrGrimm888's avatar

The case is ongoing. Claiming there is no evidence, unverifiable.

flutherother's avatar

Fusion GPS tried to dig up the dirt on Trump but I don’t think there was any collusion between them and the Russians. Why would there be when all the indications are that the Russians wanted to see Trump elected?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yellowdog read his tweets !
He and Giuliani both are about pardons including THAT the President can pardon himself. Oh I know that can’t be true cause Trump lies and he will agree.i
He is running the USA into the ground (Iron and Aluminum tariffs are paid for by us) not by the shipping country.

Amazing how much evidence you can deny when you close your eyes and stick your fingers in your ears.

Indicted:
Michael Flynn – Trump’s National Security Advisor
George Papadopoulos – Trump’s foreign policy advisor
Paul Manafort – Trump’s campaign chairman
Richard Gates – Manafort’s business partner
Konstantin Kilimnik – Manafort’s partner and Russian intelligence operative
13 Russians – who “engaged in operations to interfere with the elections and political processes”

Pled guilty:
Alex van der Zwaan – Lobbyist for corrupt pro-Russian Ukrainian president
Richard Pinedo – Sold stolen American identities to Russian groups working to disrupt the 2016 US election

Yellowdog's avatar

None of them had anything to do with Russia or the Trump campaign.

Squeeze and make ‘em sing, or compose,

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

The campaign chairman with extensive Russian contacts, the campaign foreign policy adviser who was corresponding with Russian agents, and the general who met with the Russians on behalf of the campaign had nothing to do with the campaign or with Russia.

Clown.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Yellowdog What are you talking about? Manafort was Trump’s CAMPAIGN MANAGER. Each and every one of the people indicted had spent time in Russa hobnobbing with Russian kleptocratic governmental gangsters, and there are more Russian tentacles entwined in Trump’s ACKNOWLEDGED business interests than you can shake a stick at. Kushner’s Involvement with Russian criminal oligarchs was so extensive that he was denied a security clearance. You conservatives gobbling up all that bumpkin blog Hillary conspiracy nonsense are the most gullible people I’ve ever seen.

@Yellowdog Just goes La-La-LA, hands on ears.

The witch hunt, has been quite productive at finding witches.
Trump seems more desperate each passing day, to save himself from the flames…

Yellowdog's avatar

Actually, Trump is in North Korea.
Before that, G7

Business as usual.

I remember once when one news network , the spokesperson was standing outside the White House and was saying that the Trump family had a “bunker mentality, cowering in the White House.” (same narrative about fear of Mueller) At that time, Trump was actually having dinner in France with the Royal family

You are clueless as to what is going on on the world stage or with Trump.

janbb's avatar

@Yellowdog Sorry, but you are. He was shunned and shunning at the G& and left early. He is splitting the Western alliance, sowing chaos in the world and supporting the cause of Putin to break up the West. Do you read any other sources or even look at the photos?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yellowdog Just goes La-La-LA, hands on ears.

janbb's avatar

I know which is why I rarely bother to comment.

Edit “G7”

MrGrimm888's avatar

Correct. Trump is doing just what Putin hoped for. Maybe exceeding expectations. The discourse at the G7 was a “yuge” win for Putin.

Stabilizing the Korean peninsula would also benefit Russia. We’ll see how that talk goes…

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Yellowdog Once in awhile, instead of pondering the clueless nature of the rest of us, perhaps you should have an objective look at the sources of your own “clues”. Whatever shortcomings define what is generally accepted as credible journalism, nothing you will find there can compare to the hyperbolic distortion of truth and facts defining the wing nut blogosphere.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^The poor guy’s brainwashed. May be beyond help….

flutherother's avatar

@Yellowdog Before you start claiming others are clueless about Trump and world events you should check your own facts. Trump is not in North Korea, he is in Singapore for a meeting with Kim Jong-un. Do you really believe Trump would have gone to North Korea?

And the G7 meeting was anything but “business as usual”. It was a G6 plus 1 with Trump even refusing to endorse a joint communique from the group.

janbb's avatar

@Yellowdog And if you think all the US mainstream media are lying and uttering falsehoods read foreign newspapers for their coverage of Trump; Le Monde, Der Spiegel, The Times of London, The Guardian, The Toronto Globe…...

MrGrimm888's avatar

I.find not having an account with news sources helps. That way it doesn’t taylor all news to just one view. I have a account on one app for news, and it just gives me stuff it thinks I want to hear.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Trump was actually having dinner in France with the Royal family

France does not have a royal family.

Lecture us about being clueless some more. Funny!

MrGrimm888's avatar

Uh. They don’t have a royal family, because Obama killed them in a Muslim ritual. Get your facts straight sir.
