Will you help me with my interior decorating?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46828points) January 8th, 2019

I want to replace the vertical blinds I have on my sliding glass door. They’re really getting tacky.

I am going to share pictures of the computer / dining room that they are in.

There is a lot of natural wood in here. A friend said she liked the albacore color best. I kind of agree, but I’m not a fan of white, even if they do name it after a seabird ~.

So I’m pretty sure I want this style and fabric, but I don’t know which color.
Brown

Lighter brown

Albacore

Following are pictures of the room. Warning. The room is a WRECK. Long story, but I am slowly in the process of putting it all back together. We are doing some remodeling in the living room and the overflow is in here for the time being. And that’s only half of the reason it’s a wreck.
It’s a very nice room when it’s clean, kind of like my Woman Cave. It makes me peaceful when it’s put together.

Albacore is a kind of tuna; albatross is a bird.

I think I prefer the “tuna” color the most in any case as the room seems kind of dark.

LOL! I know. :D

Yeah I think I agree. I’m not liking the reviews, though.

Also, Right now my walls are kind of an off white color, marzapan, like that only a touch more yellow. It’s the same color as all the walls in the house. Would it still look OK, so should I paint the room albatross ~ ?

Oh my gosh, Auggie to the rescue! She said she just hates vertical blinds and would go with curtains. I’ve been so focused on blinds that I was taken aback for a moment, trying to process. Then it hit me. That is THE answer! And best of all, I already have the perfect curtains! I picked them up at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago for another window project that didn’t work out.
This just saved me from a bunch of headaches. I’m just going to get a fancy cafe curtain rod, attach rings to the curtains so they can slide, and not have to worry about sliding with the blinds.
AND they already compliment the wall color.

This room screams for blue-green…

I don’t like vertical blinds either. Ick for me.

I really like wide blinds. You get the control of allowing/blocking light at different times of day. Plus allowing/blocking views inwards from people above or below the window.

I, too, cringed when I read the words “vertical blinds.” I never liked those narrow slats from the 1980s; they looked institutional, and they made all sorts of ugly commotion when they banged against each other. They’ve also aged badly; they scream of a dated fad from about 35 years ago.

I have to say, though, that this new take on vertical blinds – the larger panels – is a very different thing. @Dutchess_III, if you’re still inclined to go with one of your color choices, I think it would look nice in that room.

@Call_Me_Jay has some excellent thoughts about wide blinds.

When I did my post-house-fire redecorating, I chose 2.5” blinds for many of my windows. I’m extremely happy with the outcome. The pros:

- The wider slat is nicely proportioned to larger windows.

- When opened, the blinds give a big view and let in plenty of sunshine (fewer horizontal barriers).

- The slat edges are beveled, so there are no gaps when they’re closed.

- As Jay mentions, window blinds allow varied privacy and control over incoming light.

I think I like the brown.

The good thing about the verticals is you can swivel them to let some light in, but still maintain some privacy.

They were pretty nice when I bought them in 06. But since then we’ve lost 2 panels, the stick you used to slide them with, they don’t slide well any more, and now they’re just a hodge podge of partially opened and closed. It’s also dirty as hell under the valance thing (which I took down yesterday.)
Curtains, on the other hand, Will be so much more flexible! Best of all, I can just take them down, throw them in the wash, and they’re clean.

I have inexpensive curtains from Bed Bath and Beyond. They are a great option.

There are verticals with sheer fabric over them, so they look like curtains, but sort of function like verticals. They’re very expensive though. Here’s a photo

They come in various color.

I really like what you picked though. I’ve considered similar fir my house.

What I really want is what they have in hotels. A black out curtain with a sheer over it that move independent of each other. I’ve wanted that for years, but always decide not to because of the price.

$310!! LOL! No way, man!

No. I decided to go with actual curtains, per Auggie’s suggest on FB. I just happened to have them on hand. I bought them at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago for another project that didn’t work out. They will be perfect. All I need is the curtain rod.

Sounds good.

I posted pics of them here. They are just perfect!

Link not working.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It worked for me. It just sent you to one of my previous answers that included the pictures.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh…the PICTURE links aren’t working. Hang on.

Well, they won’t load. I uninstalled a couple of programs earlier and I have yet to restart my computer. I’m going to do that now. I’ll get back to you tomorrow.

I certainly think the room would look fantastic covered in fish scales.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I am not afraid of fish like I am of the color blue-green! Fish do not make me want to throw up and cry.

Here are couple of pics of my curtains for @JLeslie.

Very nice. They’ll dress up the joint. :).

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think so. I’m toying with the idea of getting one or 2 solid maroon panels so that when they’re fully closed they still look wavy.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Or solid light tan ones.
Or a couple of sheer tan ones. I need to hop on down to Goodwill now!
