Why have our corporate masters turned to "fake news"? Were we not already malleable enough?

Asked by SaganRitual (2072points) June 10th, 2019

Why the overkill? Surely there’s some law of diminishing returns when spinning the news. My mother-in-law is no more and no less bamboozled now than she was back in the days of “real” news. And it seems like we—on the whole—do less and less to teach children how to think critically with every passing day. Why would the owners use a firehose where an eyedropper would be more than sufficient?

I amnot sure who you are referring to as “Corporate Masters” and what fake news have they turned to.
An example would be nice.

I get my news from the BBC, Reuters, NBC, ABC.

@Dutchess_lll The corporate masters are those who own our political leaders. Those who manipulate the news, including the revered institutions you mention, finding profit in sowing and cultivating division. As for the fake news, well, I’ve never seen any of your news sources do that, but I haven’t watched any of them in a while; I don’t know how much more circus-y they might have become. On the other hand, Fox News in particular seems to be a fount of disinformation, based on the crazy I am always hearing from those who watch it day and night.

You might object: Fox News has nothing to do with you. But those who profit from the division sown by your news sources are the same who profit from the wack promulgated by Fox et al.

Peace and luck

Well, I guess they’re making money doing what they’re doing. That would answer your question.

It’s same sleight of hand so useful to feats of grifting. You divert the victims from concentrating on the hands in their pockets through deployment of loud noises and shiny objects.

@Dutchess_lll No, I don’t think “they’re making money doing what they’re doing” that answers the question at all.

They have media monopolies, pocketed politicians and much much more, so of course they’re making insane amounts of money.

But why drop the bar so very very low?

^I guess because news organizations want a loyal base? And they cultivate that by making news fit people’s preconceived notions and biases, even if it means making up “facts”.

Malleability must be maintained and reinforced. The disingenuous requires constant and systemic massaging of those to be deformed. The truth has a nasty habit of working its way from behind the noise and shiny objects, which is why such distractions must be varied and interchanged with great frequency.

To cause doubts in the minds of future voters so that they can manipulate the populace into voting for there favorite.
By doing this they also cause everyone to doubt the legitimate as well…total confusion.
The chickens are stirred and the axe will fall when voting takes place and a President will be voted in.Hopefully a wise, intelligent one will be in power to return to civility.

Diminishing returns? Not in the land of deplorable Republican voters who vote for human filth and continue to support that filth.

You mean the oligarchs that pull strings in the background? I suspect some exist and do try to influence politics but I have not seen hard evidence of it. I see political pandering and political agendas being played out but I feel it’s more ratings and ad revenue related.
