Why doesn't it work when I hit "enter" after I type in a web page's search box?

Asked by furious_rose (476points) December 9th, 2019

Whenever I type something in the search box on a web page (like the one up in the top right hand corner at Fluther) and hit “enter,” the expectation is that the search will be performed. But when I hit “enter,” nothing happens! I’ve tried it in Opera and Chrome, and it doesn’t function correctly in either one! I feel like I should know what the problem is, but I don’t. How do I fix this?

Works for me. I use Firefox.

Your keyboard may be dirty. Turn it upside down and bang on it. Or use a vacuum cleaner that has a hose that can be reversed (hooked up backwards. Then blow it out).

An example of a search term would help.

I could type “swan” in the search box and hit enter, and nothing happens. It should open a page where it lists all instances of the word “swan,” but it does nothing. Oh, and my “enter” key works just fine (I type for a living and I wouldn’t be able to manage without an “enter” key!). Maybe I’m not phrasing this question correctly. I’ll think about how I could word it more clearly…

I get swanm2018 and bellaswan (usernames). Is there a question that has “swan” it?

Yes there is.
If we say “All swans are white”, but don’t know the…” But the 1st time, enter key gave me the “Oops….internal….” page, and the 2nd time (I didn’t change browsers) it gave me the page:

@furious_rose, again. Try loading Firefox and using that as your browser. Chrome and Opera suck.

So, did you switch over to Firefox and is it working now @furious_rose?

Opera is not the problem. Hitting Enter on Opera works, as long as the cursor is still in the search field.

I think something is messing that up. Such as, being on a laptop with one of those touch-sensitive touch pads built right in front of the keyboard, so the user might brush it when typing, causing the cursor to move, possibly causing the search field to lose focus.

Or, it could be something in settings, or an annoying plugin or virus or malfunctioning driver or OS bug of something awful like that.

I know it sounds like I am an amateur internet user, and I’m sure I would come to the same conclusion about my problem as the rest of you (dirty keyboard, touchpad issues, etc) but I assure you, this is not something like that. I think maybe Zaku is correct about it being a plugin issue or virus, etc., since I do not have touchpad issues and my keyboard is not dirty. I will reinstall my browsers and see if that helps.

Is that the only thing you have a problem with, I don’t know why that is. Just the search box and just in Fluther, if that is the case.

I reinstalled all my browsers and it still doesn’t work. ugh
