Space Cop, from the movie “Space Cop”, portrayed by the magnificent Rich Evans.

I enjoy the Lethal Weapon and Die Hard movies a lot.

I have almost every episode of Monk. Tony Shaloub made that character quite believable and entertaining.

Eddie Janko.

Detective Lenny Brisco.

And of course, how can anyone forget the immoral Lieutenant Frank Drebin, ace detective of Police Squad:

Mayor: Drebin, I don’t want anymore trouble like you had last year on the South Side. Understand? That’s my policy.

Frank: Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That’s my policy.

Mayor: That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of “Julius Caesar”, you moron! You killed 5 actors! Good ones.

I think the theme here is cool people in the 70’s.

I second @YARNLADY
Mariska Hargitay (Olivia) has her own organization that helps and supports victims of sexual assault or any other type of abuse. She started it because of all the support she was getting from victims. They were sending her letters telling their story all because of her character. I don’t watch the show as much but I love her.

Also all the Criminal Minds characters. Especially Garcia

Andy Sipowitz from NYPD Blue.

He had his white enclave 1950s upbringing smashed against 1990s reality every episode. He had a rigid personal moral code that made him drop his prejudices, but we could see it wasn’t easy.

Also despite being a NYPD show, he has the most quintessential Chicago accent on TV. To most viewers I imagine it just sounds like “city guy”.

I’ve liked many of them in different ways… some that come to mind at the moment:

Jane Tennison (q.v. Prime Suspect)
The Seven Ups
Serpico
Buddy “Cloudy” Russo in The French Connection
Columbo
Foyle
Mike Stone & Steve Keller (The Streets of San Francisco)
Mick Belker, Frank Furillo, etc (Hill Street Blues)
Taggert
