How long will an opened bottle of Caesar dressing keep in the fridge?

Asked by Jeruba (55836points) August 17th, 2020

It’s hot. I want to make a salad for supper tonight.

I don’t use Caesar dressing that often, and when I do I usually end up buying a new bottle because the open one tastes slightly sour to me. But Caesar dressing does taste slightly sour. I hate to throw away the one I opened in April, but is it still good?

And will it still be good in December?

Is there a better test than my uncertain taste?

No expiration date on the bottle?

I was also wondering about the expiration date.

The expiration date on my bottle of organic 1000 Island is APR 8, 2021, and I think I bought it last January!

I’m asking for experience here. The recommended last sale date may or may not mean anything, but how long an open package is good for doesn’t necessarily relate to its shelf life unopened.

A jar of tartar sauce is good for a long time after it’s opened. So are a jar of pickles and a jar of honey. Some things may keep well until you open them, and then they’re over the hill right away.

Other things, such as dry packaged dinners and soup mixes, are fine long past their “best by” date for removal from the supermarket shelf.

The fact that the dressing comes in a 12-ounce bottle suggests that it’s meant to keep for a while. But the fact that it’s good for sale until sometime next year (i.e., unopened) says nothing about how long after opening it should remain usable.

I have this very same problem. I bought Caesar in the refrigerator section, so I’m thinking after a few weeks throw it out?

If it’s from the pantry aisle it should have preservatives in it, and I would think it’s good for three months after opening if it is still within the expiration date. I keep ranch that long in the fridge.

When in doubt throw it out.

I’m no expert.

Mine stays good for three or four months. I usually throw out the last inch or two.

I am pretty brave when it comes to stuff like this. I would use it for six months after I open it.

When it comes to expiration dates, I don’t use that as a guide for when something will go bad, I go by when I’ve opened it.

My 1000 Island dressing still tastes fresh, but according to this, Caesar dressing lasts for 1–2 months.

It also shows that 1000 Island dressing lasts for 1–2 months, so I guess my perspective is similar to @jca2.‘s

It’s fine. I keep salad dressing in the fridge for years.

I come to savor Caesar, not to chuck him.

@Jeruba You didn’t duck low enough.

Jeruba's avatar

@janbb, no matter how low I duck, there’s always a lower duck. The time to worry is when the lower ducks get put in charge.

@Brian1946, only if they’re not secured by duck tape.

It’s good until several Senators come and stick it with knives?

My dad saw Caesar dressing just before that happened! ;-p

Et tu Ranchus?

zenvelo's avatar

The expiration date for Caesar dressing is always August 2nd (8/2).

That’s the Brutal truth.

Inspired, @zenvelo. Painful, but inspired.

After-action report: The bottle I opened in April (on which I’d written the date opened) was just fine. We had my favorite summer salad, Romaine lettuce with seedless red grapes, shredded Parmesan, chilled prawns, and Caesar dressing. I substituted smoked salmon for the son who doesn’t like shrimp. Just the thing for a day in the nineties, when no one wants to cook.
